How much do prn jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 19, 2026, the average hourly pay for prn in the United States is $40.83, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $32.21 and $48.08 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does PRN mean in a job title?

PRN is a medical abbreviation for the Latin term 'pro re nata,' which means 'as needed.' In a job context, a PRN position refers to a role where an employee works on an as-needed basis, rather than a fixed schedule. PRN workers are often called in to cover shifts when regular staff members are unavailable due to illness, vacations, or increased workload. These positions are common in healthcare and offer flexibility, but may not guarantee a set number of hours or benefits.

How does working as a PRN healthcare professional differ from holding a full-time or part-time position in terms of scheduling and team integration?

Working as a PRN healthcare professional offers flexible scheduling, meaning you work on an as-needed basis rather than following a set weekly schedule. This flexibility can be ideal for balancing work with other commitments, but it also means your hours and assignments may vary from week to week. PRN staff are often called in to cover shifts due to staff shortages or increased patient needs, so adaptability is key. While you may not be as integrated into a specific team as full-time staff, strong communication skills and the ability to quickly adapt to different units or teams are valuable assets. Over time, successful PRN professionals often find opportunities to build relationships across multiple departments, which can enhance both job satisfaction and future career opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PRN nurse, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PRN nurse, you need a valid nursing license, strong clinical skills, and the ability to quickly assess and respond to various patient needs. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and standard hospital equipment is crucial, as assignments may vary. Exceptional adaptability, time management, and communication skills help PRN nurses integrate seamlessly into different teams and settings. These abilities are vital because PRN nurses must deliver high-quality care on short notice while adjusting to diverse workflows and environments.

How do I become a PRN?

To become a PRN (pro re nata or as-needed) healthcare professional, typically you need to hold the appropriate state licensure or certification for your field, such as a registered nurse or medical technician license. You should also have relevant experience, be flexible with scheduling, and often complete any facility-specific onboarding or training requirements. PRN positions usually do not require a fixed schedule and are filled based on staffing needs.
