How much do prn medical coder jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 19, 2026, the average hourly pay for prn medical coder in Indiana is $21.34, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $17.16 and $22.88 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Prn Medical Coder position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PRN Medical Coder, a strong understanding of medical terminology, coding systems (such as ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS), and healthcare documentation is essential, often supported by certification like CPC or CCS. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) systems and coding software is commonly required to accurately assign codes and support billing processes. Excellent attention to detail, time management, and adaptability are key soft skills, especially given the variable hours and fast-paced work typical of PRN roles. These skills ensure accurate coding, compliance with regulations, and efficient reimbursement—crucial for supporting healthcare operations in a flexible, part-time capacity.

What is a PRN medical coder?

A PRN medical coder is a healthcare professional who codes medical records on an as-needed basis, often working part-time or per shift without a fixed schedule. They review clinical documentation to assign appropriate diagnosis and procedure codes, typically using coding software and requiring certification such as CPC. This role offers flexibility and requires strong attention to detail and knowledge of coding guidelines.

What does a typical work schedule look like for a PRN Medical Coder, and how flexible are the hours?

PRN (pro re nata) Medical Coders are typically hired to work on an as-needed basis, which means their hours can vary depending on the employer’s workload and staffing needs. This often provides greater flexibility compared to full-time positions, as you may be called in to cover for absences, peak periods, or special projects. While some assignments may be completed remotely, others may require on-site work, so it's important to clarify expectations with each employer. This flexible structure is ideal for professionals seeking a varied schedule, but it may require a proactive approach to managing your own availability and balancing multiple assignments.

What pays more, CCS or CPC?

For medical coders, Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) credentials generally lead to higher salaries than Certified Professional Coder (CPC) credentials, as CCS is often preferred for hospital coding roles and involves more complex coding tasks. However, salary can vary based on experience, location, and employer, with CCS holders typically earning a premium. Both certifications are valuable, but CCS often commands higher pay in the healthcare industry.

Will AI eventually replace medical coders?

Medical coders play a crucial role in translating healthcare diagnoses and procedures into standardized codes, and AI tools are increasingly used to assist with coding tasks. However, human oversight is essential to ensure accuracy, interpret complex cases, and handle exceptions, so AI is more likely to augment rather than fully replace medical coders in the near future.

What is a PRN Medical Coder job?

A PRN (as-needed) Medical Coder reviews patient records and assigns standardized medical codes for diagnoses, procedures, and services to ensure accurate billing and compliance. Unlike full-time or part-time coders, PRN coders work on an as-needed basis, often filling in during busy periods or staff shortages. They must be proficient in coding systems such as ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS, and typically work in hospitals, clinics, or remotely. This role requires strong attention to detail and knowledge of medical terminology, insurance policies, and regulatory guidelines.

Which medical coder position pays the most?

Senior or specialized medical coding roles, such as inpatient coding or coding supervisor positions, tend to offer the highest salaries for medical coders. Certifications like CPC, CCS, or CCS-P can also lead to higher pay, especially with experience and in healthcare settings like hospitals or large clinics.
