Both Private Agents and Private Investigators often require similar credentials and work in surveillance and investigation roles. Private Agents may have a broader scope, including security and personal protection, while Private Investigators focus primarily on investigations. Both roles serve clients in legal, corporate, or personal matters, with overlapping skills and environments.

What is a private agent?

Private agents, often referred to as private investigators or private detectives, are professionals hired to conduct investigations on behalf of individuals, businesses, or organizations. They gather information, conduct surveillance, and perform background checks to help solve cases such as missing persons, fraud, or infidelity. Private agents typically work independently or as part of a private investigation firm and must adhere to legal and ethical standards. Their findings are often used for legal proceedings, personal matters, or corporate concerns.

What are common challenges faced by private agents when gathering information for clients?

Private Agents often encounter difficulties such as limited access to certain records, uncooperative witnesses, and situations requiring discretion and confidentiality. Managing these challenges requires strong investigative skills, legal knowledge, and adaptability. Additionally, Private Agents must be prepared to work irregular hours and handle potentially stressful situations while maintaining strict adherence to ethical and legal standards.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a private agent?

To thrive as a Private Agent, you need strong investigative skills, legal knowledge, and often a background in law enforcement or criminal justice, with many roles requiring licensure. Familiarity with surveillance technology, databases, and evidence collection tools is typically necessary. Discretion, analytical thinking, and excellent interpersonal skills help agents gather information effectively and build trust with clients. These abilities are crucial to ensure thorough, lawful investigations and to maintain client confidentiality.

Job description

About the Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated Leasing Agent to join the leasing team at a privately owned owner/operator and developer with a growing residential portfolio throughout New York City. This role will be responsible for leasing across a portfolio of 2–3 residential communities in Brooklyn, providing variety, high leasing volume, and significant earning potential. One in North Brooklyn, the other in Coney Island.

The ideal candidate is energetic, customer-focused, and thrives in a fast-paced environment. Whether you've built your career as an on-site Leasing Agent or as a licensed New York City real estate professional, you'll have the opportunity to represent a respected ownership group while helping prospective residents find their next home.

About the Company

Our client is a nationally recognized real estate investment, ownership, and management company with a significant portfolio spanning multifamily, condominium, retail, office, and mixed-use assets across major markets. The firm is known for owning and operating high-profile properties and offers the opportunity to work directly alongside ownership in a sophisticated, entrepreneurial environment.

Role and Responsibilities
  • Serve as the primary leasing representative for a portfolio of 2–3 residential buildings throughout Brooklyn.
  • Conduct apartment tours and showcase the unique features and lifestyle offered at each community.
  • Build relationships with prospective residents while providing an exceptional customer experience from first inquiry through move-in.
  • Guide applicants through the leasing process, including applications, approvals, lease execution, and move-in coordination.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of current market conditions, pricing, and competing properties.
  • Conduct regular inspections of model apartments, vacant units, and amenity spaces to ensure presentation standards are maintained.
  • Partner closely with property management and maintenance teams to deliver a seamless resident experience.
  • Assist with lease renewals and resident retention initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate leasing reports and CRM activity while helping drive occupancy across the portfolio.
Qualifications
  • 1–3+ years of residential leasing experience, preferably within multifamily housing.
  • New York State Real Estate Salesperson License, or willingness to obtain one.
  • Outstanding communication, presentation, and customer service skills.
  • Highly organized with strong follow-up and relationship-building abilities.
  • Knowledge of Fair Housing regulations and New York City rental practices.
  • Experience with Yardi, On-Site, Nestio, BuildingLink, or similar property management software is a plus.
  • Ability to work weekends as part of a rotating leasing schedule.
Compensation & Benefits
  • Base Salary: $75,000 plus commissions
  • Strong earning potential through a high-volume leasing portfolio
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision benefits
  • 401(k) with company match
  • FSA, HSA, and commuter benefits
  • Paid time off and holidays
  • Excellent long-term growth opportunities within a privately owned real estate organization
