Job description

Position Description This is a Temporary Position The part-time Communications Coordinator assists with identifying communication issues for the City and developing and implementing communications for internal and external audiences. Scope of Impact: The duties and responsibilities of this job are performed with latitude for independent judgment in accordance with Department and City policies, Federal, State and Local regulations and are based on detailed knowledge of Department operations. Work is subject to periodic review by the supervisor, who provides approval of recommendations and discusses assignments, priorities and work.

Essential Functions Assists with monthly resident newsletter. Writes articles and takes photographs; Assists with production and distribution. Assists with management and design of the City's websites.

Writes and edits content; Takes and resizes photographs and graphics; Analyzes website traffic and patterns; Serves as an administrator of CMS. Manages the City's employee extranet, Edinet. Writes and edits content; Takes and resizes photographs and graphics; Serves as an administrator of CMS.

Assists with Edina TV programming, including community bulletin board messages and meeting production. Writes and edits scripts for programming as needed. Develops news releases, as needed, to appropriate news media and professional journals.

Works with the media as needed. Maintains and monitors City social media sites. Writes and edits content; Takes and resizes photographs and graphics; Places ads/boosts content; Analyzes traffic and patterns.

Assists with production of other City newsletters, flyers, posters and other materials as needed, for print and electronic distribution. Takes photographs and maintains digital asset management system to help chronicle municipal events, activities, programs and services. Helps plan special events for the City and its various enterprises and Departments.

Prepares and provides communication assistance in the event of an emergency or disaster. Performs other duties and activities as assigned. Performs other duties and activities as assigned.

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: The job requires a Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations or a related field and a one year of related work experience. The incumbent must have photography and website and social media management skills. The incumbent must possess a valid Minnesota driver's license or equivalent evidence of mobility.

Desired Qualifications: Previous experience working with media, and previous local government experience. Also desired is experience with basic graphic design software such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Canva, etc. Supplemental Information Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Desirable for Successful Job Performance: Knowledge of target audiences and ability to analyze related data; Knowledge of the principles and practices of public/media relations; Knowledge of print and electronic media; Knowledge of governmental operations, organization and administrative practices; Writing, editing, organization and oral communication skills; Graphic design skills; Word processing skills; Web content design and management skills; Knowledge of social media and ability to write for social media sites; Demonstrates the desired standard of conduct and work performance including confidentiality and privacy requirements of the Department; Encourages suggestions that will improve quality of service; Encourages respect and team spirit for fellow employees.

Physical and Mental Requirements: Physical effort is light to moderate, with occasional lifting of up to 40 pounds. Writing and editing communications materials will at times require extended use of a keyboard. Working Conditions: Most work is performed in a normal office environment.
