TULSA WORLD
Managing Editor, Digital
Responsible for developing and implementing digital newsroom processes and tactics to grow the digital audience of the Tulsa World, Tulsa's trusted daily news source since 1905. This highly operational position reports to the executive editor and has the potential to evolve into a supervisor role.
The person filling this role will use digital analytics to connect Tulsa-area readers to the digital content they care about. This will be accomplished through effective management of digital assets, including news stories, photo collections, vertical video, polls, website and social media.
This highly collaborative role will measure, interpret, support and coach every corner of our newsroom as the Tulsa World strives to surpass digital performance goals.
Position Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement digital processes and tactics to boost digital readership
  • Coordinate and publish daily digital content on the website and other digital platforms at peak performance times
  • Write early versions of breaking news stories for online publication
  • Plan, research, write copy and edit content for the website using digital engagement best practices and journalism ethics and standards
  • Coordinate with content and digital editors to ensure appropriate print and online presentation
  • Produce short videos and graphics to drive engagement
  • Craft creative social media content to enhance reader experience online
  • Build and curate photo galleries to enhance reader online experience
  • Write engaging, SEO-friendly headlines and summaries appealing to current and potential subscribers
  • Research and implement emerging trends in digital media; develop innovate digital practices to attract digital audience
  • Use analytics to guide decisions and build brand awareness
  • Engage with people who interact with us on social media
  • Communicate effectively with writers and editors about long-term and daily content plans
  • Determine which daily stories/photos/videos can be broken out into additional assets
  • Identify assets and trending topics that can be reworked into new assets, such as 5 things to know, FAQs, etc.
  • Manage assets to hit daily, weekly, monthly and annual goals
  • Work with editors and reporters to identify opportunities for reporters to produce quick videos
  • Work closely with city editor to be aware of planned stories, photos, video, news, etc.
  • Serve as front-line digital editor on daily basis
  • Ensure journalism ethics are practiced in the newsroom; understand libel, privacy and fairness issues and ensure the newsroom meets those standards

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of structure and content of English, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar
  • Knowledge of communication and dissemination techniques and methods including alternative ways to inform via written, oral and visual media
  • Knowledge of video creation and video software
  • Skill in active listening to understand what people are saying, to gather accurate information, to understand points being made, and asking questions as appropriate
  • Skill in critical thinking by using logic and reasoning to identify pertinent information needed to develop stories and judgment to determine newsworthy stories for intended audience
  • Skill in attention to detail, researching, organization, time management and planning
  • Ability to read and understand information and ideas in writing
  • Ability to communicate information clearly in writing and speaking so others will understand you
  • Ability to work independently and as a team under deadlines
  • Ability to use equipment such as cameras, recording devices and lighting to produce optimal visual media
  • Role is hybrid in Tulsa with at least Tuesdays in the office

Education & Experience
  • A bachelor's degree in digital journalism or related field or equivalent related experience is preferred
  • Minimum five years of experience with digital journalism and multimedia journalism is required
  • Experience using Blox, Social News Desk, Parse.ly a bonus
