Reports to: Printshop Lead
Position Type: Unpaid Volunteer
Location: Expected to be on-site during convention dates.

About Anthro SoCal

Anthro SoCal is a community-driven convention celebrating furry fandom through art, performance, gaming, and social connection. Our success depends on the dedication and enthusiasm of our volunteer team. Anthro SoCal was formally known as Another Furry Con in 2024-2025.

Position Overview

The Printshop Designer is a creative, fast-moving staff member responsible for producing physical signage, updates, and custom print jobs on demand during the event. Operating directly under the Printshop Lead, you will staff the central Printshop Desk throughout the convention, taking design requests from various departments, executing clean graphic layouts, and operating printing equipment to keep the convention running smoothly. Additionally, as a visible point of contact, you will assist staff with general inquiries and route specialized questions to the appropriate leadership. If you possess solid design fundamentals, handle quick turnarounds well, and want to support the convention behind the scenes with your visual skills, this position is an ideal fit.

Time Commitment
  • Year-round: None
  • As convention approaches: Attend online staff meetings and trainings when requested
  • Convention weekend: On-site presence is required to work a set schedule
  • Pre and post-convention: On-site presence may be required to assist with setup and teardown activities the day before and the day after the event
Key Responsibilities

Your duties will focus on real-time graphic creation, printing operations, and internal customer support:

  • Printshop Desk Staffing: Maintain a consistent, active presence at the Printshop Desk during assigned shifts to receive and prioritize incoming design and print requests from convention departments
  • Signage & Collateral Design: Utilize basic graphic design software to rapidly create, adjust, or reformat layout files for official signage, schedule changes, directional markers, and custom event materials
  • Print Production & Equipment Operation: Prepare print files, manage print queues, operate laser printer, and trim paper stock for department pickup
  • Inventory & Station Care: Monitor paper and toner stock levels, keeping the Printshop workspace clean, organized, and safe for all team members
Qualifications

Required:

  • Basic Graphic Design Skills: Fundamental proficiency with open source design software and a firm grasp of typography, layout spacing, and file formatting
  • Punctuality & Shift Reliability: Strict adherence to scheduled shift times to ensure the Printshop Desk remains covered and ready for urgent print requests
  • Adaptability & Speed: Ability to work efficiently under tight convention deadlines, turning rough requests into polished printouts without losing attention to detail
  • Outstanding Decorum & Customer Service: A friendly, patient, and collaborative attitude when taking requests from tired department leads or answering general questions

Preferred:

  • Fandom & Convention Knowledge: Familiarity with convention terminology, floor maps, and signage needs, helping you anticipate layout context and reduce design revisions
  • De-escalation & Task Management: The ability to stay calm, focused, and organized when multiple high-priority print orders arrive simultaneously
What We Offer

While this is an unpaid volunteer position, we provide:

  • Free convention membership and staff perks
  • Staff hospitality (meals/snacks during your shifts at-con)
  • Exclusive staff events and social opportunities
  • Recognition in convention materials
  • Experience in event management and team leadership
  • A supportive, creative community environment
  • References and recommendation letters upon request

Anthro SoCal is committed to creating an inclusive environment. We welcome volunteers of all backgrounds, experiences, and skill levels. All volunteers must be 18 years of age or older.
