What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Primary Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Primary Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, project management, and a relevant engineering degree or certification. Familiarity with CAD software, industry-specific codes, and project management tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills set outstanding Primary Engineers apart. These skills are crucial for designing safe, efficient systems and successfully leading projects from concept to completion.

What are some common challenges faced by Primary Engineering professionals when coordinating with other departments on large-scale projects?

Primary Engineering professionals often collaborate with design, civil, and construction teams to deliver complex infrastructure projects, such as substations or transmission lines. One common challenge is ensuring clear communication of technical requirements and design changes across multiple departments, which can impact project timelines and outcomes. Additionally, aligning schedules and priorities between engineering and field teams requires strong project management and adaptability. Proactively participating in cross-functional meetings and utilizing project management tools can help mitigate these challenges and foster effective teamwork.

What is primary engineering?

Primary engineering refers to the design, development, and implementation of the main systems and components of a project, typically in the power and energy sector. This includes work on high voltage equipment such as transformers, circuit breakers, and switchgear in substations and power plants. Primary engineers ensure that these components are specified, arranged, and integrated safely and efficiently to meet operational requirements. They often collaborate closely with secondary engineers, who focus on control and protection systems.

What is the difference between Primary Engineering vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectPrimary EngineeringMechanical Engineering
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in engineering or related field, engineering licenses often preferredBachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, licensure optional but beneficial
Work EnvironmentDesign, analysis, and project management in various industries, often on-site or office-basedDesign, testing, and manufacturing in labs, factories, or offices
Industry UsageCommonly used in construction, infrastructure, and civil projectsWidely used in manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, and energy sectors

Primary Engineering focuses on overseeing engineering projects, often in civil or infrastructure contexts, requiring specific certifications. Mechanical Engineering covers a broader range of mechanical systems, with a strong emphasis on design and manufacturing. Both roles require engineering degrees, but their applications and industries differ.

Job description

SME, Primary Engineering, Energy and Infrastructure Projects

LOCATION: Phoenix, AZ (On-Site)

Built on more than a century of innovation and decades of substation expertise, Linxon blends AtkinsRéalis' project management strength with Hitachi Energy's technological leadership. Together, we deliver high-performing EPC solutions that strengthen the power grid.

We support community growth and industrial development by providing end-to-end engineering, procurement, management, and construction services for complex AC substation and electrification projects across five core markets.

We believe in the value of every client's investment and take pride in tackling challenging, high-risk projects. With deep expertise and continuous development, our teams operate with the precision, resilience, and mission-focus needed to deliver crucial infrastructure—often described as the "special forces" of our industry.

As the Subject Matter Expert, Primary Engineering at Linxon, you will be at the forefront of transforming the energy landscape across the Americas. In this pivotal role, you will apply your technical mastery to develop innovative Substation Layout Designs spanning 765kV to 11kV, directly contributing to the modernization, resiliency, and sustainability of the power grid.

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you will collaborate with multidisciplinary experts—Project Lead Engineers, BIM Engineers, Protection & Control Engineers, and Civil Engineers—collectively shaping solutions that enable reliable energy access, support the integration of renewables, and strengthen critical infrastructure for future generations. Your insights won't just support projects; they will influence how communities and industries stay powered in a rapidly evolving energy world.

While this is an individual contributor position, it is intentionally built for someone ready to grow into a leadership path. With demonstrated performance and vision, you can advance into a Lead Engineer or Primary Engineering Team Leader role within 3–5 years. This is more than a technical role—it's an opportunity to lead change, elevate engineering excellence, and leave a lasting impact on the region's energy transformation.

You will deliver high-voltage designs that strengthen grid reliability and support clean-energy growth.

You will produce buildable layouts and specifications that reduce construction issues and keep procurement on track.

You will apply advanced engineering analysis to prevent failures and ensure long-term system performance.

You will lead design reviews and provide targeted site support to resolve issues early and avoid costly rework.

You will collaborate with engineering, supply chain, and field teams to ensure seamless execution from design to energization.

You will build customer confidence by presenting clear, dependable technical solutions that enable successful project delivery.

You have hands-on experience with both outdoor and indoor GIS applications, including a solid understanding of the building infrastructure needed to support indoor GIS systems.

You are skilled in CAD software, such as AutoCAD and/or MicroStation, and use these tools to produce accurate, high-quality design deliverables.

You hold a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with at least five (5) years of experience, or a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering with at least three (3) years of experience.

You ideally hold or are working toward a Professional Engineering (P.Eng.) certification.
