Practicum Assistant information

What is the role of a student assistant?

A student assistant supports staff or faculty by performing administrative tasks, organizing materials, or assisting with projects. In a practicum setting, they may also gain practical experience related to their field of study and develop relevant skills such as communication and organization.

What jobs pay 4000 a week without a degree?

Practicum assistants typically do not earn $4,000 a week without a degree, as this pay level is uncommon for entry-level or internship roles. High-paying jobs that can reach this level without a degree often include specialized trades like commercial pilots, real estate brokers, or certain sales positions, which may require licenses or certifications instead of formal degrees. These roles usually demand significant experience, skills, or licensing to achieve such earnings.

How many hours a week is a practicum?

A practicum for a Practicum Assistant typically requires 10 to 20 hours per week, depending on the program and organization. The schedule may include evenings or weekends and often involves supervised, hands-on experience relevant to the field.

What's a practicum vs. internship?

A practicum is a supervised, hands-on learning experience often part of a student's academic program, focusing on applying theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting. An internship is a work experience, usually for college students or recent graduates, that provides practical skills and industry exposure, often paid or unpaid, and may be shorter-term. Both can enhance a Practicum Assistant's skills, but a practicum typically emphasizes academic integration, while an internship emphasizes work experience.

Job description

The University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work invites applications for a full-time 12-month appointment-stream (i.e., non-tenure track) faculty position to join our Office of Practicum Education that serves Pitt's BASW and MSW programs.

The Pitt School of Social Work seeks a faculty colleague who is attuned to current directions and cutting-edge issues in practicum education, has experience providing responsive, supportive, and excellent practicum education, and is committed to being part of a diverse, inclusive, welcoming, and forward-thinking culture that embraces student-centered and quality-improvement focused practice. We are interested in candidates who are prepared to support practicum education for BASW and MSW students across the spectrum of social work practice, with a particular focus on educating students in our Community, Organization, and Social Action (COSA) specialization. Strong candidates will have demonstrated commitment to and passion for supporting social work education in the classroom and in practicum education; ability to work collaboratively; and excellent interpersonal skills with colleagues, students, and agency partners.

This is an exciting time to join our school. Last fall, we welcomed our first cohort of online MSW students. The Pitt School of Social Work is consistently ranked among the top schools in the nation. It is known for its strong educational programs (BASW, MSW [micro and macro], and Ph.D.); innovative, interdisciplinary, diverse, and productive faculty; community-engaged work and partnerships, and national leadership via long-standing and emerging programs and centers on race, child welfare, mental health, and other domains. The school is deeply committed to fostering engaged learning opportunities across the Pittsburgh region and beyond through an extensive network of practicum partners.  We are also home to social work's first and longest standing program in community organizing. This combination of resources, activities, and colleagues within and beyond the School creates an intellectually stimulating and supportive environment.

We are seeking a colleague to begin in Fall 2026. This position includes teaching social work courses, service on school committees, and responsibilities related to practicum education. Practicum faculty responsibilities include identifying community placement opportunities, matching students to placements, serving as a faculty liaison to support student learning in practicum, and training community practicum instructors.  The position requires an MSW and at least 5 years of post-MSW practice experience. Competitive applicants will bring demonstrated experience and expertise in social work practicum education and social work practice. The position also requires facility with academic software and technology that promote excellence, efficiency, transparency, and accountability.
