Job description

RK&K's Transportation division is seeking a Practice Development Leader in Utah. As a critical leader in a targeted growth market, you will have the opportunity to work with the RK&K leadership team to build and manage a team of professionals working towards connecting client needs with innovative and creative solutions.

Essential Functions

Market Growth & Leadership

  • Serve as RK&K's transportation leader in Utah, helping establish and grow the firm's market presence and reputation.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key transportation agencies, municipalities, and industry partners, including UDOT, local governments, MPOs, counties, and transit agencies.
  • Identify and pursue opportunities that align with RK&K's long-term growth strategy in the region.
  • Represent RK&K at industry events, conferences, professional organizations, and client meetings to elevate brand awareness and market visibility.

Project Delivery & Technical Leadership

  • Lead large and multifaceted transportation design and planning projects in a dynamic, fast-paced, team-oriented environment to ensure successful delivery within scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Provide senior technical oversight on roadway, highway, transportation planning, and design projects.
  • Review and certify engineering plans, models, and technical documents to ensure quality standards and standards of care are met.
  • Guide engineering planning efforts, including conceptual roadway plans, alternatives analyses, corridor studies, safety improvements, and transportation system enhancements.
  • Analyze and develop interchange and roadway alternative studies and recommend innovative, cost-effective transportation solutions.
  • Oversee preparation of construction documents, specifications, and cost estimates.

Team Building & Mentorship

  • Recruit, mentor, and grow a high-performing transportation team.
  • Foster a collaborative, high-accountability culture focused on innovation, professional development, and exceptional client service.
  • Partner across RK&K's national transportation practice to leverage technical expertise and resources while building local capabilities.
  • Direct project staff and subconsultants on various transportation assignments.

Client Management

  • Serve as a trusted advisor and liaison between RK&K and clients.
  • Coordinate and strengthen relationships with clients, consultants, government agencies, and project stakeholders.
  • Manage contracts, project financial performance, invoicing, and progress reporting.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited engineering program
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license
  • 15+ years of progressive experience in transportation/highway engineering, including project delivery experience in Utah
  • Demonstrated success in client relationship management, business development, and market growth
  • Experience with on-call and project specific transportation pursuits and delivering complex infrastructure projects
  • Strong understanding of transportation design standards, including AASHTO, MUTCD, UDOT standards and procedures, and other applicable roadway design manuals
  • Expertise in OpenRoads Designer, MicroStation, GEOPAK, and/or InRoads, with strong proficiency in Microsoft Office products
  • Proven leadership experience managing multidisciplinary teams and mentoring technical staff

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • Established relationships within the Utah transportation market, particularly with UDOT, municipalities, counties, MPOs, and transit agencies
  • Experience building teams, expanding market presence, or launching operations in a new geographic region
  • Strong executive presence, communication, and relationship-building skills
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with a passion for growing business and mentoring talent
