What does a power quality engineer do?

A Power Quality Engineer is responsible for analyzing, monitoring, and maintaining the electrical power quality in industrial, commercial, and utility systems. They identify and mitigate issues such as voltage sags, harmonics, flicker, and power interruptions that can affect system performance and equipment reliability. Their work involves conducting power quality studies, implementing corrective measures, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. They often use specialized tools and software to diagnose and improve electrical system performance.

What are some typical challenges a power quality engineer faces on the job?

Power Quality Engineers often encounter challenges such as diagnosing complex electrical disturbances, managing multiple projects simultaneously, and staying up-to-date with evolving industry standards and technologies. They may need to quickly troubleshoot power anomalies, develop mitigation strategies, and communicate technical findings to clients or non-technical stakeholders. These engineers regularly collaborate with utility companies, facility managers, and design teams, making teamwork and adaptability important.
