Job description

 

The Manager, Electrical Engineering will lead and develop a team of electrical engineers responsible for the design, development, verification, and lifecycle support of active implantable medical devices (AIMDs). Reporting to the Director, Product Development, Implantables, this role is accountable for delivering robust electrical hardware solutions that meet clinical performance objectives, safety requirements, quality standards, and global regulatory expectations while driving technical innovation and engineering excellence.

 

Major Areas of Accountability

  • Leadership & Management
    • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of electrical engineers supporting active implantable medical devices.
    • Allocate resources, set priorities, and manage workload to achieve project timelines and business objectives.
    • Foster a culture of innovation, technical rigor, collaboration, and quality compliance.
    • Provide leadership, coaching, and professional development opportunities to engineering staff.
    • Strong people management skills with the ability to inspire, coach, and develop talent.
    • Strategic thinking with hands-on problem-solving skills.
  • Technical Ownership and Oversight
    • Guide the architecture, design, development, and integration of complex electrical hardware systems for new and existing products.
    • Contribute to the definition of system-level electrical requirements and ensure effective translation into subsystem and hardware requirements.
    • Leading analog and digital circuit design, low-power electronics, implantable device architectures, power distribution, signal integrity, and embedded hardware integration.
    • Ensure adherence to applicable standards including IEC 60601, ISO 14708, ISO 14971, and other relevant medical device requirements.
    • Collaborate with all functions within R&D and across the organization, including clinical experts, to ensure holistic product performance.
    • Serve as a key technical resource for EMC, electrical safety testing, and compliance activities.
  • Project & Process Management
    • Support product lifecycle management from concept through verification, validation, transfer to manufacturing, and post-market support.
    • Ensure rigorous risk management practices, including hazard analysis and FMEA, are applied to all designs.
    • Champion design control processes in accordance with FDA requirements and applicable global regulations.
    • Coordinate with Quality, Regulatory, Manufacturing, and Clinical teams to ensure successful product development and regulatory submissions.
  • Innovation & Continuous Improvement
    • Drive adoption of best practices, continuous improvement initiatives, and engineering process maturity within the Electrical Engineering function.
    • Evaluate emerging technologies, platform reuse opportunities, and scalable design approaches to enhance product performance and patient outcomes.
    • Drive root-cause analysis and resolution of complex hardware issues throughout development and sustaining phases.
    • Support generation of intellectual property aligned with departmental and organizational strategies.

Basic Qualifications

  • Education & Experience
    • Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering, or related field. Master's degree in related field is preferred.
    • 8+ years of engineering experience.
    • 3+ years in a leadership or managerial role.
    • Proven track record developing safety-critical, implantable, or Class III medical devices.
    • Strong knowledge of embedded systems and safety-critical software.
  • Technical Skills
    • Knowledge of analog and digital circuit design, embedded hardware, EMC, electrical safety, and verification testing.
    • Familiarity with IEC 60601, ISO 14708, ISO 14971, and other applicable medical device standards.
    • Ability to lead complex technical programs and multidisciplinary engineering teams.

      • Competitive Compensation: The compensation range for this position is $116,734  -  $175,101. Actual compensation is influenced by a variety of factors including but not limited to skills, experience, qualifications, and geographic location. Hired candidates may be eligible to receive additional compensation in the form of bonuses and/or incentives.
