CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, PE license often preferredBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, PE license common
Work EnvironmentDesigning and maintaining electrical distribution systems, fieldwork, substation workAnalyzing and optimizing entire power systems, simulations, planning
Industry UsageUtilities, construction, infrastructure projectsUtilities, consulting firms, power generation companies

Power Distribution Engineers focus on designing and maintaining electrical distribution systems, ensuring reliable power delivery at the local level. Power Systems Engineers work on the broader power grid, analyzing and optimizing entire electrical networks. While both roles require similar credentials and often work within the utility industry, their scope and daily tasks differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Power Distribution Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Power Distribution Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, power systems analysis, and often a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, ETAP, and SCADA systems, as well as relevant certifications like a Professional Engineer (PE) license, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you excel in collaborating with teams and addressing technical challenges. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring reliable, safe, and efficient power delivery within complex electrical networks.

What is a Power Distribution Engineer?

A Power Distribution Engineer is a professional responsible for designing, maintaining, and improving electrical distribution systems that deliver electricity from substations to homes, businesses, and industries. They ensure that the electrical infrastructure operates safely, efficiently, and reliably by planning network layouts, selecting appropriate equipment, and addressing any issues that arise. Power Distribution Engineers often work with utility companies, contractors, and regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with safety standards and codes. Their role is critical in supporting the growing demands on electrical grids and integrating new technologies such as renewable energy sources.

What are some typical challenges a Power Distribution Engineer faces when coordinating with utility companies and construction teams?

Power Distribution Engineers often navigate complex coordination between utility companies, construction teams, and local authorities to ensure projects stay on schedule and comply with safety standards. Challenges can include managing changes in project scope, resolving unexpected site conditions, and balancing multiple stakeholders' priorities. Effective communication, adaptability, and a solid understanding of regulatory requirements are essential to overcoming these hurdles and ensuring successful project delivery.

Job description

We are the movers of the world and the makers of the future. We get up every day, roll up our sleeves and build a better world -- together. At Ford, we're all a part of something bigger than ourselves. Are you ready to change the way the world moves?
In this position...
At Ford, we are driving the future of automotive innovation, and our Low Voltage Power Net Architecture team is at the forefront of this transformation. We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Engineer with an automotive CAE background to join our dynamic team.
The Opportunity: In this critical role, you will be a key contributor to the development and release of advanced power supply architectures across all Ford vehicle platforms. Your primary focus will be on creating, enhancing, and utilizing sophisticated simulation environments for these complex electrical systems. You will bridge the gap between theoretical design and real-world performance, ensuring the integrity, efficiency, and safety of our low voltage power supply architectures before they ever reach physical prototypes. This position offers the chance to apply cutting-edge CAE techniques to drive innovation in automotive power management.
Responsibilities
What you'll do...
  • Develop Power Supply simulation environment: Develop a simulation environment for power supply architectures on 12V and 48V including power supply components and required vehicle interfaces in an automotive development process.
  • Component modeling: Integrate component models of power sources and energy storage into the electrical system model. This supplier specific models need to represent electrical, thermal and aging behavior.
  • System model verification: Coordinate a structured verification process for the power supply model on component and system test bench level. Iterate hardware test results into the model environment to optimize results.
  • Power Net verification by CAE: Verify power net architectures with respect to sizing, electrical functionality, and power supply safety concepts in this CAE environment.
  • Interface: Interface with power supply controls organization to ensure a smooth integration of 12V and 48V power net controls into the simulation environment.
  • Support the component engineers and their suppliers in developing and verifying powerful component models.
  • Support the integration of the power net model into a vehicle simulation environment.

Qualifications
You'll have...
  • A Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Experience with low voltage power supply
  • Experience with automotive CAE processes
  • 3+ years of experience with sizing and verification of automotive electrical systems
  • Demonstrated experience in Matlab/Simulink and Simscape.
  • Capability to utilize AI tools and methods in the CAE process

Even better, you may have...
  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in one of the aforementioned engineering fields.
  • 5+ years of experience with vehicle electrical architecture and automotive power distribution systems on 12V and 48V.
  • 5+ years of experience in modeling 12V and 48V electrical systems
  • Familiarity with Ford engineering processes and tools, such as: Ford Engineering Design Environment (FEDE), Jama, Global Product Development System (GPDS), Jira.
  • Experience with sizing and verification processes of automotive electrical systems.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively liaise between internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
