Job description

About the Role

As Director, Underwriting Portfolio Engineering, you will lead delivery of data products, analytical capabilities and Palantir workflows that improve underwriting decisions, identify risks and opportunities faster, and strengthen portfolio steering.

This is a hands-on technical and analytical leadership role, working directly with underwriting and portfolio teams to turn material business questions into practical data solutions.

You will own delivery from business question to analysis, build, implementation, adoption and measured impact - not just define requirements or commission work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build underwriting-specific data products, Palantir workflows and analytical tools for portfolio planning, capacity setting and steering.
  • Turn material portfolio questions into reusable analytics and decision-support capabilities.
  • Analyse performance, exposures, concentrations, dependencies and portfolio dynamics to support decisions.
  • Own solutions end-to-end, from analysis and build through adoption, refinement and impact.
  • Maintain engineering standards, controls, documentation and governance for robust, scalable tools.
  • Lead mixed engineering, data and portfolio teams, strengthening capability and team effectiveness.

About the Team

The Portfolio Strategy & Steering team combines underwriting portfolio management, engineering, data and advanced analytics.

It operates as one integrated team, with two Directors leading specialist teams, allocating resources to shared priorities and jointly accountable for quality and impact.

About You

You are a senior technical and analytical leader with deep expertise in data platforms, engineering and analytics, plus the commercial curiosity to understand underwriting portfolio questions.

You lead specialists, work directly with complex data and deployed solutions, and translate ambiguous portfolio questions into scalable capabilities.

You bring strong technical judgement, delivery discipline and credibility with underwriting, portfolio management, finance, risk, capital management, Data and IT.

We are looking for candidates who meet these requirements:

  • Hands-on experience building, deploying and maintaining data products, analytical workflows and decision-support solutions in Palantir Foundry.
  • Strong skills in data modelling, transformation, integration and production-grade development using Python, SQL or equivalent tools.
  • Ability to analyse performance, exposures, diversification, sensitivities and risk-adjusted returns, and translate findings into portfolio decisions.
  • Proven delivery from problem definition through design, build, testing, deployment, adoption and impact measurement.
  • Strong understanding of underwriting economics, portfolio management, risk, capital and capacity in reinsurance or commercial insurance.
  • Ability to explain complex issues clearly and influence senior stakeholders across underwriting, portfolio management, Data and IT.

Our company operates under a hybrid work model, with the expectation that employees work from the office three days per week every week. Please note that this role is not eligible for visa sponsorship/visa transfers/visa extension or relocation support.

The estimated base salary range for this position for Armonk, NY is between $220,000 to $330,000 and for Alpharetta, GA; Chicago, IL; Fort Wayne, IN and Kansas City, MO, the range is between: $208,000 to $312,000.  The specific salary offered for this, or any given role will take into account a number of factors including but not limited to job location, scope of role, qualifications, complexity/specialization/scarcity of talent, experience, education, and employer budget.  At Swiss Re, we take a "total compensation approach" when making compensation decisions. This means that we consider all components of compensation in their totality (such as base pay, short-and long-term incentives, and benefits offered), in setting individual compensation.
