Position Overview
Ensures the safety of patrons, including but not limited to: preventing accidents, upholding rules, watching swimmers/patrons at all times. Performing other duties as assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
(All duties listed may not be included in any one position nor does the list include all tasks found in a position of this class.)
  • Monitoring activities at the pool.
  • Administer first aid and care as required by the professional rescuer.
  • Follow facility emergency action plan.
  • Complete injury reports.
  • Respond quickly and professionally to emergencies.
  • Be safety conscious on and off duty.
  • Attend staff meetings and in-service training.
  • Enforce and adhere to pool rules.
  • Inspect facilities for general cleanliness and complete general cleaning duties.
  • Provide information to patrons in a respectful and friendly manner.
  • Ensure the pool is clean by performing routine skimming, sweeping, and vacuuming.
  • Under direction, may be asked to take food orders, prepare food, and maintain appearance and cleanliness of concession stand and Pool house at Sharon Johnston Park.
  • May be required to calculate purchases and balance cash receipts.
  • Follow all preparation and cleanliness guidelines for concession and facility operation as outlined by the Madison County Health Department.
  • Report absences and tardiness to Park Director or Pool Manager. Monitor sign in/out sheets. Participate in staff meetings and in-service training.
  • Must be able to work weekdays, weeknights, weekends, holidays and split shifts. Must have transportation to and from the park

Education and Experience
Education and Experience
  • General education.

Knowledge, Skill, and Ability
  • Knowledge of proper use of lifeguard and pool equipment.
  • Knowledge of lifesaving methods and procedures, including first aid for the professional rescuer and standard resuscitation measures (CPR)
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations governing conduct of public at pools
  • Knowledge of swimming pool sanitation
  • Skilled in lifesaving techniques
  • Skilled in swimming
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly to an emergency
  • Ability to perform rescue actions, administer first aid and CPR
  • Ability to work in tandem with a team of lifeguards and pool staff
  • Ability to deal effectively and courteously with employees and customers
  • Ability to lift heavy boxes and equipment; and ability to take charge of situations

  • Must be able to swim
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.

  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment physical and drug test.

Certifications or Licenses Required
  • Red Cross or equivalent adult and infant CPR certification and First Aid for the professional rescuer certification.
  • Must complete and pass a lifeguard training class and hold a current lifeguard certification.
  • Valid driver's license or permit.
  • Certification must be on file prior to pool opening.
