Police social workers provide counseling and crisis response support for community members who are referred by police officers. They may work within a police department or work at a social service agency and partner with law enforcement officials. As a police social worker, you may provide on-site support for victims of domestic violence or substance abuse, accompanying first-responders to scenes that need someone to negotiate with an angry or distraught individual. You may also counsel residents who have lost loved ones, suffered from property damage, or design programs for at-risk youth. Job Summary Works alongside a police social worker supervisor, police officers, other city staff and community organizations to assure adequate referral delivery to families and individuals. Provides support to individuals and families through the provision of outreach, case management and connection to community resources and supports.
Supports facilitation of the department's Adverse Childhood Experiences Response Team (ACERT) program to include initial outreach, deployments to families, data collection and maintains active partnerships with referral partners. Examples of Duties Provides referral services to individuals and families in need; including, but not limited to, housing assistance programs, mental health and substance use disorder treatment, and assistance with eligible DHHS, city and local programs. Fosters resource connections between identified parties in need of assistance and the community organizations best equipped to provide resource access through the facilitation of meetings and warm handoffs.
Organizations may include community mental health centers, recovery networks, public assistance programs, local and district departments of education, as well as other local community entities matched to the uniquely identified individual and family needs. Develops and maintains an extensive network of knowledge and community partnerships relative to local service agencies and other support systems available to the public in the City of Concord and Merrimack County. Participates in monitoring of department databases for service eligible criminal and non-criminal incidents.
Service eligible incidents include domestic disturbances, drug overdoses, welfare checks, mental health incidents, suicide attempts, death investigations, etc. in order to refer the involved parties to appropriate assistance. Incumbent could be expected to provide presentations on the functions, roles and duties of the Police Social Work Unit.
This includes internal presentations and supporting the onboarding of new departmental staff; both sworn and civilian as well as community based presentations at community organizations and/or workgroup meetings. Facilitates and coordinates ACERT for the City of Concord. This will include routine review of police logs and conversations with police officers to identify those families eligible for services.
Tracks this information in an organized fashion and provides necessary reporting to the Department of Justice As the ACERT coordinator, will manage all communication relative to deployments with department staff and community partners. This includes coordinating a pre-deployment teaming with identified community partners. Schedule deployments into the community with ACERT team members.
Conducts timely follow up after deployments to assure delivery of any preferred services or referrals. Will be responsible for maintaining resources and handouts relative to ACERT. Collaborates with school resource officers, school guidance counselors and school social workers, as appropriate, relative to community incidents involving children enrolled within the local school system.
Actively maintains databases, records or files in accordance with agency, state, and federal confidentiality standards. Provides case management input to other department staff members, as needed. Maintains and enhances professional knowledge, skills, and development by attending seminars and training programs.
Performs other related duties as assigned. Typical Qualifications Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Criminal Justice, Psychology or other social science related field with a minimum of three years of related experience. Prior home visiting experience preferred.
Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job. Experience working collaboratively with public safety organizations is preferred but not required. Supplemental Information KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of: Knowledge of local social service organizations that provide assistance to individuals and families in need.
Modern office methods, procedures, equipment, business letter writing, and standard record keeping techniques. Confidentiality protocols as they relate to licensure, individuals, situations and documents. Skill in: Sufficient computer skills to perform the documentary functions of the position.
Assessing and evaluating individualized situations. Superior communication skills, both verbally and in writing, to successfully interact with a wide variety of individuals. Ability to gain confidence and trust of person with whom they interact.

Deal effectively with psychological and environmental problems arising in connection with case work, especially involving emotionally charged situations with individuals who have experienced trauma. Establish rapport with individuals and social service organizations. Deal effectively with other agencies, employees, and the members of the public.
Self-motivated and capable of working independently. Solve practical problems and interact with a variety of individuals in various unique situations. Perform duties while sitting at a desk.
Working Conditions: Work is conducted in the office, clients' own residence and within the community. Incumbent will be expected to conduct home visits and additional community-based visits as needed; this could be individually or with another Police Social Worker. Home visits with clients could include homeless encampments or a place not meant for human habitation, in this instance, a two Social Worker response is expected.
