What Does a Police Social Worker Do?

Police social workers provide counseling and crisis response support for community members who are referred by police officers. They may work within a police department or work at a social service agency and partner with law enforcement officials. As a police social worker, you may provide on-site support for victims of domestic violence or substance abuse, accompanying first-responders to scenes that need someone to negotiate with an angry or distraught individual. You may also counsel residents who have lost loved ones, suffered from property damage, or design programs for at-risk youth. Police social workers may also train police officers in stress management, mental illness, substance abuse, domestic violence, and child abuse, and provide consultation and counseling services to police officers and their families.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Police Social Worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Police Social Worker, a master's degree in social work (MSW), relevant licensure, and strong knowledge of crisis intervention and mental health are essential. Familiarity with case management systems, trauma-informed care tools, and law enforcement protocols is typically required. Excellent communication, cultural competence, and resilience are important soft skills for building trust and de-escalating tense situations. These skills are crucial for effectively supporting individuals in crisis, fostering collaboration with police, and ensuring community safety.

How do Police Social Workers typically collaborate with law enforcement officers during crisis situations?

Police Social Workers frequently work alongside law enforcement officers during crisis calls involving mental health, substance abuse, or family issues. They provide on-scene support by conducting assessments, de-escalating situations, and connecting individuals to appropriate community resources. This collaborative approach helps ensure safety and offers a more holistic response to individuals in crisis, combining law enforcement with social work expertise. Police Social Workers also participate in follow-up care and offer guidance to officers on trauma-informed practices.

What are police social workers?

Their goal is to address underlying social problems and reduce repeat encounters with law enforcement, ultimately promoting safer and healthier communities.
