Job description

Position Summary The primary function of the PSA is to perform non-sworn law enforcement tasks, freeing sworn officers from station duties. These functions include a wide variety of tasks associated with the reception and support function of the Eastpointe Police Department. The role of a PSA is multifaceted and requires excellent multitasking ability.

Essential Job Functions An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the duties that the employee may be expected to perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.

Work the front desk reception area of the Police Department. Answer routine inquiries by telephone and in person and make proper disposition or direct them to proper authorities. Maintain forms, supplies and equipment in the front desk area.

Assist in processing, interacting with, and monitoring prisoners, including inquiries and accepting and processing bonds for prisoners. Provide seamless customer service by working cooperatively and jointly with officers and supervisors of this and other police agencies. Confirm warrants with other agencies, including SERESA dispatch.

Open, sort, file, and route mail, products, materials, and other paperwork. Process complaints and take minor reports in compliance with field-based reporting procedures. Operate various computer software and hardware and enter data into various terminals, including LEIN/NCIC.

Retrieve and process records of all types and make voice broadcasts over police radio equipment when necessary. Handle vehicle inquiries, impoundments and releases, and assist in the movement of department vehicles. Exercise good judgment, initiative and resourcefulness and maintain effective working relationships with the public, elected officials, community leaders, victims, detainees and other professionals.

Perform other essential functions and duties as delegated by the Police Chief or his designee. Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Minimum Qualifications The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, abilities and minimum qualifications necessary to perform the essential functions of the position. Requirements for the PSA position include the following: A valid Michigan operator's license. A high school diploma or GED equivalent. Knowledge of modern office practices and equipment, including keyboarding and organizational skills.

Possess strong written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills. Work cooperatively with the public and other city employees, maintaining the confidentiality of sensitive information. Ability to work for periods of time without direct supervision.

Ability to learn job-related material through observation and oral instruction. Ability to familiarize self with the geography of the City of Eastpointe. City employees are expected to possess and maintain a record of orderly, law-abiding citizenship, sobriety, integrity and loyalty as it pertains to and reflects upon their employment with the City.

PSAs who show interest in becoming a Police Officer will have the opportunity to participate in the Eastpointe Police Cadet Program. Cadets will receive training in and participate in various aspects of police work, preparing them for a future Police Officer role. Additional requirements for any PSAs applying to the Cadet Program include the following: An Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice, Police Science, or a related field, or completion of this degree upon the completion of the police academy.

The employee must be mobile in an office setting, stand, sit, stoop and kneel, use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move items of light weight and may occasionally lift and/or move items of moderate weight. The noise level in the work environment can range from quiet to very loud.
