How much do police officer prn jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 17, 2026, the average yearly pay for police officer prn in the United States is $62,148.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $48,500.00 and $74,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the difference between Police Officer Prn vs Police Officer Full-Time?

AspectPolice Officer PrnPolice Officer Full-Time
CredentialsState certification, police academy trainingState certification, police academy training
Work EnvironmentOn-call, flexible shifts, part-timeFull-time, fixed shifts, permanent
Employer UsageTemporary or supplemental staffingPrimary law enforcement role

Police Officer Prn positions are typically part-time or on-call roles requiring the same certifications as full-time officers. They offer flexible schedules and are often used to supplement staffing. Full-time police officers work regular shifts as the main law enforcement personnel. Both roles require similar credentials but differ mainly in work hours and employment status.

What is a police officer PRN?

Police Officer PRN stands for 'Police Officer Pro Re Nata,' which means 'as needed' or 'on call.' These officers are not full-time employees but work on a flexible or part-time basis, filling in shifts or providing extra coverage when required. PRN police officers have similar duties to regular officers, such as patrolling, responding to emergencies, and maintaining public safety, but their schedules vary based on departmental needs. This role is ideal for individuals who want law enforcement experience while maintaining flexibility in their work hours.

How does the schedule and workload of a police officer PRN differ from that of a full-time officer?

A PRN (pro re nata or 'as needed') Police Officer typically works on a flexible, on-call basis rather than a set shift schedule. This means your hours and assignments may vary week to week, depending on departmental needs such as special events, staff shortages, or emergencies. While you’ll perform many of the same duties as full-time officers—like patrolling, responding to calls, and writing reports—you may need to adapt quickly to different teams and work environments. This role can be ideal if you seek flexibility and variety, but it may also present challenges in maintaining consistency and building long-term rapport with colleagues.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a police officer PRN, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Police Officer PRN, you need a solid understanding of law enforcement principles, criminal justice, and emergency response, generally supported by completion of police academy training and appropriate state certification. Familiarity with law enforcement databases, body cameras, and incident reporting systems is typically required. Strong communication, quick decision-making, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are crucial soft skills in this role. These abilities are vital to ensure public safety, effective incident response, and upholding the law in a variety of unpredictable situations.
