Working Hours and/or Working Conditions: WORKING CONDITIONS: The Police Academy may be taught on multiple campuses dependent on needs of the department.Physical requirements include the ability to perform law enforcement related work that includes, lifting (including loads up to 50lbs), bending, crawling, exposure to loud noise, working inclement weather.HOURS: Hours and organization of work week as outlined by the collective bargaining agreement and based on the needs of the department.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must be able to work independently as well as part of a team.Must have good oral and written communication skills.Attention to detail and organization important.Must possess good inter-personal skills while working well with individuals in a stressful environment.Must have ability to organize tasks, identify risks and establish prioritiesMay be required to use Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Must have the ability to coordinate multiple activities.Must use good judgment and initiative in implementing systems and procedures and be proactive in problem solving and troubleshooting situations.
Supervision: SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to the Director of the Public Service Institute, takes direction from the Director of the Criminal Justice Training Center and faculty.SUPERVISION GIVEN: None.
Job Function
As a Teaching Assistant at the Public Service Institute in the Police Academy at a premier community college, you'll be combining your professional experience with established program materials to assist in creating valuable learning opportunities for students attending the Police Academy.
Job Responsibilities
- Assist faculty in classroom and drill ground activities.
- Demonstrate law enforcement skills and procedures to students.
- Act as a role player in various law enforcement scenarios.
- Assist with student skills evaluations.
- Prepare drill ground supplies, equipment and related materials.
- Assist in the maintenance of training equipment and vehicles.
- Inventory supplies as directed.
- Assist students with drill ground assignments.
- Maintain proper equipment and supply storage.
- Maintain drill ground safety and security standards.
- Observe and interact with students during classroom activities.
- Provide student instruction/tutoring as directed by faculty.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Education
High School Diploma required; associate degree preferred.
One or more of the following:
- Firearms Instructor current certification (Handgun, shotgun mandatory for application. Rifle preferred but not required for application).
- Subject Control Instructor current certification (Krav Maga certification or similar preferred but not required for application).
- Emergency Vehicle Operations instructor training
- Corrections Officer Certification
- Public service dispatcher training
- Law Enforcement Certification (MCOLES or MSCTC preferred)
- Criminal Justice Training/Certification
Qualifications
One year law enforcement related experience required.
