About This Job

Axos is seeking a VP, Commercial Underwriter to lead the underwriting and risk assessment process for complex commercial lending transactions. This role partners with Relationship Managers, Credit Officers, and Executive Leadership to evaluate creditworthiness, structure credit facilities, and ensure adherence to the institution's risk appetite and regulatory requirements. The Commercial Underwriter also supports portfolio risk management and the growth of high-quality commercial loan assets.

Responsibilities

  • Lead underwriting for large and complex commercial floorplan loans for dealers and manufacturers.
  • Analyze borrower financials, market trends, credit reports, collateral, and industry risks to assess creditworthiness and recommend appropriate credit structures.
  • Ensure underwriting decisions comply with internal credit policies, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
  • Prepare and present clear, comprehensive credit approval memoranda for senior credit committees.
  • Ensure collateral perfection under UCC Article 9, including UCC filing and search requirements, PMSI notices, and intercreditor agreements as applicable.
  • Partner with Relationship Managers to provide guidance on deal structure, risk mitigation, and policy alignment.
  • Monitor portfolio performance and proactively identify emerging risks and adverse trends.
  • Coach and mentor junior underwriters and credit analysts; provide day-to-day review and oversight as needed.
  • Contribute to credit policy development and underwriting process improvement initiatives.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on commercial underwriting, floorplan lending, and credit risk evaluation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field required; MBA or other advanced degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in commercial credit underwriting, including large and complex loan structures.
  • Strong knowledge of financial statement analysis, loan structuring, collateral evaluation, and cash flow modeling.
  • Working knowledge of applicable banking regulations and supervisory guidance (e.g., OCC/FDIC) and internal risk-rating systems.
  • Ability to communicate complex credit recommendations clearly to senior leadership and key stakeholders.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and leadership skills, with strong attention to detail.
  • Experience with portfolio management, monitoring, and risk reporting tools preferred.
  • Proficiency with credit underwriting systems and Microsoft Office (especially Excel and PowerPoint).
