What is a PM technician?

A PM technician, or preventative maintenance technician, ensures that machines and equipment are in working condition. As a PM technician, you may perform repairs on company equipment or travel to customer homes to provide service. Your job duties involve routine maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, and machine setup. The career qualifications typically include at least a high school diploma or GED certificate and on-the-job training. Employers may also require relevant experience in a similar industry and trained safety and HVAC certifications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PM technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PM Technician (Preventive Maintenance Technician), you need a solid understanding of mechanical and electrical systems, troubleshooting skills, and often a technical diploma or certification in maintenance or engineering. Familiarity with CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems), diagnostic tools, and safety protocols is typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help technicians excel in maintaining equipment and coordinating with other teams. These skills are essential to ensure equipment reliability, minimize downtime, and support smooth facility operations.
