Job description

Job Summary

The Service Plumber is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, maintaining, and installing plumbing systems in residential and light commercial environments. This position requires strong troubleshooting skills, knowledge of plumbing codes, and the ability to provide professional, high-quality service to customers.

The Service Plumber will work independently in the field, identify plumbing issues, recommend appropriate solutions, provide pricing before work begins, and complete repairs and installations safely and efficiently. All work must be performed in accordance with applicable local, state, and national plumbing codes and company standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform residential and light commercial service calls to diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and resolve plumbing issues.

  • Install, maintain, and repair plumbing systems including water supply, drainage, gas, steam, and related piping systems.

  • Identify potential plumbing problems and recommend solutions to help prevent breakdowns, repeat service calls, and equipment failures.

  • Inspect plumbing, water, gas, air, and related systems to identify leaks, malfunctions, deterioration, or other concerns.

  • Repair and replace plumbing fixtures, valves, piping, fittings, appliances, and related components.

  • Test joints, piping systems, and completed repairs to verify proper operation and code compliance.

  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, specifications, building plans, and plumbing codes to determine job requirements.

  • Inspect structures and work areas to determine material and equipment needs and establish appropriate installation layouts.

  • Measure, cut, thread, bend, ream, assemble, and install pipe, tubing, fittings, and related materials.

  • Locate and mark pipe installations, connections, passage openings, and fixture locations.

  • Install plumbing assemblies, fittings, valves, appliances, and fixtures using appropriate hand and power tools.

  • Provide customers with clear pricing and obtain approval before beginning additional or recommended work.

  • Explain completed services and repairs to customers and ensure they understand the work performed.

  • Maintain a professional and customer-focused approach while working in customers' homes and businesses.

  • Accurately document service calls, materials used, labor time, job numbers, and other required information.

  • Complete and submit service paperwork, parts sheets, receipts, purchase orders, and other documentation accurately and on time.

  • Communicate with dispatch after completion of each service call and provide appropriate job updates.

  • Obtain purchase order numbers when purchasing materials and accurately document associated costs.

  • Maintain a clean, organized, properly stocked, and professional service vehicle.

  • Participate in vehicle, equipment, and inventory inspections as required.

  • Maintain company tools and equipment in safe and proper working condition.

  • Follow all company safety procedures, policies, and plumbing industry best practices.

  • Participate in company-sponsored safety meetings, technical training, and professional development programs.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Minimum of five (5) years of verifiable plumbing experience, preferably within residential service and maintenance.

  • Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills.

  • Knowledge of local, state, and national plumbing codes.

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, specifications, and building plans.

  • Experience installing, servicing, and repairing residential and light commercial plumbing systems.

  • Ability to accurately estimate basic repair costs and change-order work.

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to work independently in the field.

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.

  • Ability to clearly explain plumbing concerns, repair recommendations, and completed work to customers.

  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel or similar programs.

  • Ability to accurately complete electronic or written service documentation.

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

  • Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and plumbing equipment.

Education and Licensing
  • High School Diploma or GED required.

  • Journeyman Plumber License required or applicable licensing based on local requirements.
