How much do plc engineer jobs pay per year?
What is a PLC engineer?
A PLC Engineer is responsible for designing, programming, maintaining, and troubleshooting Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) used in industrial automation systems. They develop control system logic, integrate PLCs with other hardware and software, and ensure efficient operation of automated machinery. PLC Engineers work in industries like manufacturing, energy, and automotive to optimize production processes, improve system reliability, and reduce downtime.
What do PLC engineers do?
What are the typical daily responsibilities of a PLC engineer?
PLC Engineers typically spend their days designing, programming, and troubleshooting automation systems for industrial processes. Their responsibilities often include developing and modifying PLC code, running tests to ensure optimal functionality, diagnosing and repairing faults, and collaborating with electrical engineers, maintenance teams, and production staff. They may also be involved in on-site commissioning and providing technical support for ongoing operations. This hands-on blend of programming and problem-solving means every day can bring new challenges, keeping the role dynamic and engaging.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the PLC engineer position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a PLC Engineer, you need strong knowledge of electrical engineering principles, experience with programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and usually a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard PLC programming languages (like Ladder Logic), SCADA/HMI systems, and certifications from manufacturers such as Siemens or Allen-Bradley are often required. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills are highly valued in this role. These competencies ensure the reliable automation and operation of industrial systems, which is critical for productivity and safety.

Job description
POSITION OVERVIEW
Provide technical leadership and design of electrical controls and PLC programming of a diverse range of custom automated systems. The diversity of the systems requires a strong aptitude to grasp a wide range of processes and components. The systems consist of a variety of electrical, hydraulic, mechanical and measurement components including:
- PLC and an associated ladder logic program
- Human-machine interface (HMI) and associated programming
- AC motor controls (e.g. contactors and/or variable speed drives)
- Hydraulic and pneumatic components
- Electro-mechanical components
- Pressure Transducers, Temperature Transmitters, Flow Meters, Level Sensor, Encoders, etc.
- Proximity sensors, Relays, Pushbuttons
- Machine Safety: Safety Controllers, Light Curtains, Scanners, Guard Door Switches, etc.
- Other standard electrical control components
The Controls Engineer will work closely with the Project Manager, Systems Engineer and Client to accomplish the electrical control and programming requirements of each system. The control engineer will be responsible for establishing design concepts and budgets, executing the design and programming and working with system technicians to build the systems. Execution requires meeting the delivery schedule and budgets as established for purchased components and assembly costs.
 RESPONSIBILITIES & REQUIRED SKILLS
- Strong technical understanding and experience concerning the design of electrical control systems for custom machines and PLC and HMI programming. Allen-Bradley or Siemens are typical.
- Effective leadership and communication to provide technical direction to other disciplines.
- Develop electrical control concepts to meet Customer requirements and present those concepts verbally and in written quotations.
- Accurately estimate all required electrical control system costs. This includes but is not limited to design labor, programming labor, build labor, purchased hardware costs and commissioning.
- Knowledge of AutoCAD Electrical or SOLIDWORKS Electrical CAD software to create, modify and/or review electrical control designs is required. Experience using SOLIDWORKS Electrical strongly preferred.
- Work closely with the project team and/or Customer representatives as required to review and modify design functionality.
- Supporting Titan personnel and outside suppliers during the design and build phases of a project in order to explain design intent, oversee progress, answer questions, aid in solving problems and give technical direction.
- Proficiency in using Microsoft Office products.
- Ability to take direction from the project manager and be an effective communicator.
EDUCATION
Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in designing electrical controls for custom systems
