What is a platform engineer?

A platform engineer writes code that bridges the gap between software and hardware and tests the system so that it runs effectively and smoothly. In this career, you are a vital part of the software and hardware industries. You run diagnostics tests to verify the correct design of hardware, which usually means writing code for manufacturing diagnostics so that the testing of the hardware takes place automatically. The qualifications needed for a career as a platform engineer include a bachelor’s degree in computer science or an associate’s degree and relevant work experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a platform engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Platform Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science, systems architecture, and cloud infrastructure, often supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with containerization tools (like Docker and Kubernetes), infrastructure-as-code platforms (such as Terraform), and cloud services (AWS, Azure, or GCP) is typically required, along with relevant certifications. Strong problem-solving skills, collaboration, and effective communication help Platform Engineers drive reliability and innovation within technical teams. These competencies are crucial for building scalable, secure, and efficient platforms that support an organization's technology needs.

How does a platform engineer typically collaborate with development and operations teams?

Platform Engineers work closely with both development and operations teams to design, build, and maintain scalable infrastructure and deployment pipelines. They often serve as a bridge, ensuring that applications can be deployed reliably and efficiently while meeting the requirements of both teams. Regular communication is key, as Platform Engineers gather feedback from developers about tooling needs and coordinate with operations to uphold system stability and security. This collaborative environment fosters automation, streamlines workflows, and supports continuous delivery practices.

What is the difference between Platform Engineer vs DevOps Engineer?

AspectPlatform EngineerDevOps Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in CS or related field, often cloud certificationsBachelor's in CS, DevOps certifications (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
Work EnvironmentDesigning and building platform infrastructure, working with cloud servicesAutomating deployment, CI/CD pipelines, and system operations
Industry UsageTech companies, cloud providers, SaaS firmsSoftware development, IT operations, cloud services

Platform Engineers focus on creating and maintaining the underlying infrastructure and platforms, while DevOps Engineers streamline development and deployment processes through automation. Both roles collaborate closely but have distinct focuses within the software development lifecycle.

Do platform engineers make good money?

Platform engineers typically earn competitive salaries that vary based on experience, location, and industry. They often have skills in cloud computing, automation, and scripting, which can lead to higher compensation levels compared to other engineering roles.

What will a platform engineer do?

A platform engineer designs, builds, and maintains the underlying infrastructure and tools that support software development and deployment. They work with cloud services, automation, and scripting to ensure scalable, reliable, and efficient systems, often using technologies like Kubernetes, Docker, and CI/CD pipelines.

ABOUT THIS ROLE

Job Description Apex Fintech Solutions is seeking a Platform Engineer to join our Cloud Engineering team. In this role, you will design, build, and manage the cloud infrastructure and foundational services that power our financial products. You will work alongside a talented team of platform engineers under the guidance of senior technical leaders to deliver scalable, reliable, and secure infrastructure on Google Cloud Platform (GCP). This is a hands-on individual contributor role ideal for an engineer with solid cloud infrastructure and infrastructure-as-code experience who is eager to deepen their expertise in platform and cloud engineering within a fast-paced fintech environment.

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Design, provision, and manage cloud infrastructure on GCP using Terraform and infrastructure-as-code (IaC) practices
  • Build and maintain reusable Terraform modules, templates, and patterns that enable engineering teams to self-serve infrastructure safely and consistently
  • Develop and improve CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure deployment, ensuring reliable and repeatable delivery of cloud resources
  • Manage and optimize GCP services including GKE, Cloud Run, Cloud SQL, Pub/Sub, BigQuery, IAM, VPC networking, and Cloud Storage
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve cloud infrastructure reliability and performance issues, contributing to incident response as needed
  • Implement and enforce cloud security best practices including IAM policies, network segmentation, encryption, and compliance controls
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to understand their infrastructure needs and deliver effective, well-architected cloud solutions
  • Contribute to reducing operational toil through automation, self-service tooling, and process improvements
  • Maintain infrastructure documentation, runbooks, and operational procedures
  • Stay current with GCP services, Terraform releases, and emerging cloud-native technologies and practices
  • Support cost optimization efforts by monitoring cloud spend and recommending right-sizing and efficiency improvements
Education and/or Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical discipline (or equivalent work experience)
  • 3-5 years of experience in cloud engineering, infrastructure engineering, or DevOps
  • Hands-on experience with a major cloud platform required - GCP preferred (GKE, Cloud SQL, IAM, VPC, Pub/Sub) or AWS (EC2, EKS, S3, RDS, IAM, VPC, Lambda)
  • Strong experience with Terraform for infrastructure provisioning and management
Required Skills/Abilities
  • Strong proficiency in Terraform (modules, state management, workspaces) and IaC best practices
  • Solid understanding of cloud services across GCP (Compute Engine, GKE, Cloud Run, Cloud SQL, IAM, VPC, Cloud Storage, Pub/Sub, Cloud Logging/Monitoring) or equivalent AWS services
  • Working knowledge of networking fundamentals including DNS, load balancing, firewalls, and VPN/interconnect
  • Familiarity with scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash, Go) for automation and tooling - not a heavy software development role
  • Understanding of cloud security principles including least-privilege IAM, network security, encryption at rest/in transit, and compliance frameworks
  • Experience managing or supporting CI/CD infrastructure including GitHub Actions workflows and runners
  • Understanding of infrastructure compliance requirements and the ability to implement controls to meet regulatory and audit standards
  • Solid understanding of DevOps and SRE principles including CI/CD, GitOps, and deployment strategies
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot complex infrastructure issues
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to collaborate across engineering teams
  • Ownership mentality with personal accountability and attention to detail
  • Eagerness to learn new cloud technologies and adapt to a rapidly evolving infrastructure landscape
Preferred Skills/Abilities
  • Familiarity with observability and monitoring tools (e.g., Cloud Monitoring, Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog)
  • Familiarity with data orchestration tools such as Apache Airflow
  • Understanding of FinOps principles - cloud cost allocation, tagging strategies, budgeting, and right-sizing recommendations
  • Awareness of disaster recovery (DR) strategies, multi-environment architecture, and infrastructure resilience patterns
  • Financial services or regulated environment experience
  • Familiarity with financial systems, trading and accounting concepts, and compliance within regulated environments
  • Cloud certifications (GCP Associate Cloud Engineer, GCP Professional Cloud Engineer, AWS Cloud Practitioner, AWS Solutions Architect Associate)
