What Does a Planner Do?

Within a business, a Planner works alongside Project Managers to create and adhere to timelines for a company goal. Planners help develop the overall strategy for a project, including setting deadlines for key milestones and allocating resources appropriately. Ultimately, the Planner is in charge of the project schedule. Their duties include meeting with clients to determine the general timeline of a project and communicate any adjustments to that scope. They help troubleshoot problems as they arise while minding any regulatory or contractual obligations. Along with the project manager, the Planner may be responsible for creating and presenting progress reports for clients and company leadership.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Planner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Planner, you need strong analytical abilities, project management skills, and typically a relevant degree in urban planning, logistics, or a related field. Familiarity with GIS software, data analysis tools, and planning regulations is often required, along with certifications like AICP for urban planners. Effective communication, problem-solving, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for engaging stakeholders and handling complex projects. These skills ensure efficient project execution, regulatory compliance, and the ability to address community or organizational needs effectively.

How does a Planner typically collaborate with other departments to ensure project success?

Planners work closely with multiple departments, such as engineering, procurement, and project management, to coordinate schedules, allocate resources, and monitor project timelines. Regular meetings and updates are common to ensure alignment on goals, address potential obstacles, and keep everyone informed of progress or changes. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as Planners often serve as the central point of contact for schedule-related information and adjustments throughout the project lifecycle.

What is the difference between Planner vs Scheduler?

AspectPlannerScheduler
Primary RoleDevelops project plans, timelines, and resource allocationsCreates and manages schedules, updates timelines, and tracks progress
Required CredentialsTypically requires project management or related certificationsOften requires scheduling software proficiency and related certifications
Work EnvironmentInvolves planning meetings, project teams, and strategic sessionsFocuses on software tools, calendar management, and real-time updates
Industry UsageCommon in construction, manufacturing, and project managementUsed across industries like manufacturing, IT, and logistics

While both roles involve scheduling and coordination, a Planner focuses on creating comprehensive project plans and resource allocation, whereas a Scheduler primarily manages and updates schedules to ensure timely project execution. Understanding these differences helps organizations assign the right responsibilities and find qualified professionals.

Demand Planner
About TireHub:
At TireHub we move more than tires - we move businesses forward, support communities, and help keep America rolling. And behind it all? Our people. We call them Hubbers - because they're at the center of everything we do. Role Summary:
The Demand Planner at TireHub is responsible for developing accurate, data-driven demand forecasts that drive inventory availability, maintain serve levels, and optimize working capital across a tire distribution network.
This role works cross-functionally with Sales, Category Management, Supply Planning, and Tire Logistics Centers, and Finance to develop a consensus-based demand plan through the S&OP process.
This is a highly visible role that reports to the Demand Planner Leader.
When you say YES to something bigger:
• Choose your day one benefits which include a no cost health insurance option
• TireHub funded Health Savings Account
• Additional benefit options including TireHub paid short/long term disability and life insurance benefits
• Paid vacation and holidays
• Parental leave programs
• Build your financial future with 401k including TireHub match
• Access to tire discounts, perks, and so much more!
• Enjoy access to the TireHub headquarters location in Ravinia Plaza including free parking, free gym, convenient restaurants, outdoor spaces, special events and more.
The individual must exhibit the following core TireHub commitments:
• Approachable - If a company could smile, we would. Instead we rely on our people to show it. We care about each other and our customers because we know business only gets done right when people respect each other and value relationships.
• Adventurous - What TireHub is set up to do is intentionally outrageous. So, we readily embrace challenges with the courage to introduce new ideas and the ambition to build something unique.
• Relentless - We tackle our work with energy. We deliver on our commitments with enthusiasm. And we don't give up until we get to the end.
• Speedy - Speed is the currency in the tire industry. When we commit to a job, we get the job done - and we do it fast.
Role Specifics:
Demand Forecasting & Signal Development
  • Develops and maintains SKU-location level demand forecasts across TireHub's distribution full distribution network, including RDC's and last-mile fulfillment nodes.
  • Incorporates multiple demand drivers:
  • Historical shipment and outbound order trends by DC and lane.
  • Dealer buying patterns, order frequency, and purchase behavior.
  • Seasonality (e.g., winter tire transitions, regional weather-driven demand increase)
  • Promotional and pricing actions.
  • Warehouse capacity and throughput constraints that may shape order fulfillment patterns.
  • Generates a baseline (statistical) forecast and layer in business intelligence to produce consensus-adjusted plan.
  • Continuously refine forecast models and SKU segmentation strategies (A/B/C classification, product lifecycle, regional variability, velocity tiers)
  • Leads or actively supports the monthly Demand Review within the S&OP cycle.
  • Collaborates with Sales and Category teams to capture field-level market intelligence and upcoming demand drivers.
  • Facilitates alignment on:
    • Unconstrained demand plan (true market demand, pre-supply constraints)
    • Distribution network risks and inventory positioning opportunities
    • Key assumptions tied to dealer activity, seasonal transitions, and DC-level trends
  • Presents clear, data-backed insights and recommendations to cross-functional and senior leadership.
  • Own forecast performance measurement and reporting, including:
    • Weighted MAPE (wMAPE) at the SKU-DC level
    • Forecast Bias by product category, region, and distribution node
    • Forecast Value Add (FVA) to validate statistical vs. adjusted forecast performance
  • Performs root cause analysis on forecast errors, including:

    • Demand variability driven by dealer ordering behavior
    • Inbound replenishment timing and warehouse receipt patterns
    • Promotional lifts and post-promotion demand troughs

  • Delivers actionable recommendations to reduce forecast volatility and improve fill rate outcomes
  • Partners with Supply Planning and DC Operations to translate the demand plan into replenishment strategies, inbound scheduling, and DC-level inventory targets.
  • Aligns with Finance on demand assumptions supporting volume forecasts and working capital planning.
  • Works closely with Sales to stay ahead of dealer trends, regional market shifts, and large account activity.
  • Coordinate with Category Management on product lifecycle events:

    • New product introductions and phase-in planning
    • Phase-outs, replacements, and end-of-life SKU management

  • Drives continuous improvement in demand planning processes, tools, and governance across distribution network.
  • Standardizes forecasting best practices across regions and product categories.
  • Supports implementation and enhancement of planning systems and inventory visibility tools.
  • Builds scalable demand planning capabilities that support TireHub's growth across its warehouse distribution footprint.

Competencies:

  • Winning Attitude: Consistently finds ways to win in a fast paced, dynamic environment
  • Collaborates: Building partnerships and working collaboratively with others to meet shared objectives

Experience and Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Business, Finance, Analytics, or related field

  • Experience in distribution, retail, or consumer products preferred

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Strong analytical mindset with the ability to work with large, complex datasets at the SKU-location level.
  • Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, modeling, data analysis); experience with WMS or TMS data a plus.
  • Experience with forecasting or planning systems (SAP, Anaplan, Kinaxis, Blue Yonder, or similar).
  • Deep understanding of demand variability, replenishment cycles, and distribution network dynamics.
  • Familiarity with warehouse fulfillment metrics (fill rate, order cycle time, DC throughput) and how they connect to demand accuracy.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder alignment skills across both operational and commercial functions.
  • Ability to influence cross-functional partners, including warehouse and operations leaders, without direct authority.
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, high-SKU, multi-DC environment where speed and accuracy both matter.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate across all levels of the organization, tailoring communication with ease to best connect with a target audience.

Work Environment
  • This is a fast-paced and dynamic operating environment.
  • Most of the time is spent sitting, constantly viewing monitors in a comfortable position with frequent opportunity to move around. There may be occasions to move or lift light articles.
