We are seeking a motivated, detail-oriented Financial Planning Intern to support our advisory team in delivering comprehensive wealth management and client service. The intern will contribute to financial planning analysis, investment research, and client meeting preparation. This role is ideal for a student interested in a career in financial planning, wealth management, investment management, or financial advisory services.

We are particularly interested in candidates who demonstrate intellectual curiosity, professionalism, humility, strong communication skills, and a genuine desire to learn and contribute within a collaborative team environment.

During this paid internship, you will gain firsthand experience with comprehensive financial planning by assisting a team of CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER professionals who develop deep client relationships and deliver personalized financial advice across investments, retirement, tax, insurance, and estate planning.

This in-person internship is in our Richmond, VA office.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare and update financial planning reports covering cash flow, net worth, investments, retirement planning, risk management and insurance, tax planning, and estate planning.

  • Gather, organize, and validate client financial data, including account statements, tax documents, insurance information, and estate planning documents.

  • Support client meeting preparation and follow-up, helping ensure advisors deliver a thoughtful, organized, and exceptional client experience.

  • Review client financial information to help identify planning considerations related to tax deductions and credits, cash flow, debt and credit management, insurance coverage, and long-term goals.

  • Assist with investment and portfolio analysis, including asset allocation, diversification, performance reporting, and research on investment products and market conditions.

  • Conduct industry, economic, and product research to support advisor recommendations and financial planning strategies.

  • Create accurate client-facing materials, including presentations, deliverables, reports, and educational resources.

  • Enter and maintain information in client relationship management (CRM), financial planning, and reporting systems while following documentation and data accuracy standards.

  • Use Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint to organize data, perform basic analysis, and communicate findings.

  • Participate actively in training sessions, and professional development opportunities while demonstrating curiosity, collaboration, and a willingness to learn.

  • Collaborate with advisors and team members on special projects, process improvements, and business development support.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently pursuing a bachelors degree in Financial Planning, Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business, or a related field.

  • Interest in a career in financial planning, wealth management, investment management, or financial advisory services.

  • Coursework or experience related to personal finance, investments, accounting, economics, retirement planning, insurance, or estate planning is helpful.

  • Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills with consistent attention to detail and data accuracy.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; experience organizing data, using formulas, or creating presentations is helpful.

  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to summarize information and explain findings.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, ask thoughtful questions, and work effectively in a collaborative team environment.

  • Demonstrated professionalism, accountability, and attention to detail in academic, work, leadership, athletic, or volunteer environments.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships, collaborate with team members, and communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

  • Intellectual curiosity and a willingness to learn through feedback, coaching, and hands-on experience.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  • Participation in a financial planning or investment club, case competition, student organization, leadership role, volunteer experience, or other activity demonstrating initiative and teamwork.

  • Previous internship, customer service, administrative, research, accounting, banking, or financial services experience.

  • Familiarity with financial planning software, portfolio reporting tools, CRM systems, or data analysis tools.

  • Interest in pursuing the CFP certification and learning the standards of professional conduct, confidentiality, and compliance required in a client-facing financial services environment.

  • Leadership experience through student organizations, athletics, community involvement, or campus activities.

  • Experience in customer service, hospitality, retail, coaching, mentoring, or other roles requiring relationship management and communication.

  • Evidence of balancing multiple commitments while maintaining strong academic, extracurricular, or professional performance.
