Job description

JOB TITLE: Mgr Substation Physical Engineering
REQUISITION: TRA0103
DEPARTMENT: Substation Physical Engineering - Front & Manchester Service Center
LOCATION: Kansas City, MO
PAY RANGE: $124,500 - $166,000
Scheduled Work Hours:   Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Summary of Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

This position is accountable for directing all aspects of substation physical engineering activities for the Evergy substation and power system. Accountable for innovative design, resident technical matter expertise, and real-time technical support related to substation physical design and operation. Accountable for the development and training of the substation physical engineering staff. The position is responsible for the management of the day-to-day operations of the team, including review of engineering solutions, job assignments, project cost estimating, and coordinating with other departments.

Duties and Responsibilities:
    Provides leadership and is responsible for the direct daily supervision of the substation physical engineering staff. Manages highly skilled and technical group of Substation Physical Engineers.
    Manage department O&M budget.
    Provide oversight to the estimating of substation projects (including the use of any consultants for design engineering) for the capital budget. 
    Oversee creation of new or updating of existing company substation physical standards. Ensure compliance with industry and internal standards.  
    Coordinate material sourcing strategies with procurement for large assets, identifying approved vendors, material specifications, and contracts. 
    Accountable for oversight of substation physical engineering activities including project scoping, all aspects of substation physical design, material specification, project schedule baselining, and estimates.  
    Responsible for effective, efficient, and competitive utilization of resources, with emphasis on safety, timeliness, cost-containment, system reliability, customer satisfaction, optimal asset utilization, and compliance with regulations.
    Develops leadership, selects and retains a motivated and empowered workforce. Models innovative approaches. Promotes employee involvement in continuous learning, career planning and enhanced job/industry knowledge and skills.
    Provides oversight and approval for development of new and maintenance of existing material specifications.
    Provides support for internal customers such as Transmission & Distribution Planning, Large T&S Construction, and C&M Maintenance departments.
    Accountable for substation physical engineering staff's response to requests from and interaction with internal and external customers.  
    Perform other leadership duties as required. 
 

Education and Experience Requirements:

    Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an ABET accredited program.
    Minimum of 8 years relevant and direct experience in substation physical engineering. 
    Must have 5 years of leadership experience or previous supervisory (direct and/or indirect) experience.
    Professional Engineering registration preferred.
    Demonstrated specific experience in substation physical design, including all aspects of substation physical design development, large scale project completion, and use of contract or consultant engineering resources.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required:

    Effective leadership, interpersonal, communication (oral and written), cost analysis, negotiation, human relation, communication, and project management skills are necessary for this position.
    Ability to develop and manage department O&M budget.
    Ability to provide support and technical insight to the Substation capital budget process.
    Ability to work Safely and address safety related items.
    Ability to execute goals and objectives.
    Clear and concise verbal/written communications.
    Strong analytical skills for development of engineering plans and recommendation.
    Ability to understand and express complex technical concepts.
    Ability to select, lead, mentor, and develop employees

Licenses, Certificates, Bonding and/or Testing Required: Drivers license.

Working Conditions:  Conditions will vary from office, substation, power plant, and transmission line field environments. Must be able to work additional hours on short notice in office and field settings through normal and severe weather conditions.
