Position Summary Information
Minimum Qualifications
The Department of Philosophy and Religion at Appalachian State University invites applications for a renewable 3-year faculty position in Philosophy at the rank of Teaching Assistant Professor beginning August 2026.
The requirements for the position are a Ph.D. in Philosophy with a demonstrated ability to teach Logic, and teaching competence in at least two of the following areas: Critical Thinking; Philosophy of Science and/or Technology; Metaphysics; History of Analytic Philosophy; Philosophy of Democracy. Special interest will be given to candidates who also have demonstrated teaching competence in Religious Studies, which may include non-Western religious traditions and comparative studies of religion.
Candidates who are ABD will be considered, but the position requires a Ph.D. in Philosophy to be awarded by July 1, 2026.

The Department of Philosophy and Religion provides distinctive academic programs in which students critically and creatively examine the beliefs, values, practices, and institutions that shape human lives. The department guides students in becoming reflective and resilient individuals who contribute to their communities in constructive and meaningful ways. It achieves this mission through excellence in teaching, research, and service; a variety of pedagogical approaches and research methods; collegial and collaborative relationships; and an abiding commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and sustainability. In its curriculum and campus engagements, it recognizes a plurality of the world's many philosophical and religious perspectives.
The department offers separate undergraduate degree programs in Philosophy and Religious Studies and minors in Philosophy, Religious Studies, Philosophy and Religious Studies, and Philosophy, Politics, and Economics.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Instructional duties will include teaching in the above areas and other philosophy courses as needed. The successful hire will also be expected to participate in service activities.
All faculty and staff are expected to support Appalachian State University's Strategic Priorities.

Proposed Date of Hire 08/01/2026 Suggested Salary Range Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. ABD Consideration: ABD with reduction in rank and salary (see desc. below) ABD Description
ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.
No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered.
