What is permanent recruitment?

Permanent recruitment is the process of finding and hiring employees for long-term, full-time positions within an organization. Unlike temporary or contract staffing, permanent recruitment focuses on candidates who will become integral members of the company, often receiving benefits and opportunities for career growth. This process typically includes sourcing, interviewing, selecting, and onboarding candidates who are expected to stay with the organization for an extended period.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in permanent recruitment?

To excel in Permanent Recruitment, you need strong interpersonal skills, a deep understanding of talent acquisition strategies, and experience with candidate screening and selection. Familiarity with applicant tracking systems (ATS), recruitment software, and sometimes certifications like LinkedIn Certified Professional–Recruiter are valuable. Outstanding communication, negotiation, and relationship-building abilities help recruiters connect with both clients and candidates. These skills ensure effective placements, client satisfaction, and long-term workforce success for employers.

What are some common challenges faced in permanent recruitment roles, and how can they be managed?

Professionals in permanent recruitment often face challenges such as sourcing qualified candidates in a competitive talent market, managing client expectations, and ensuring a strong match between candidate and company culture. These challenges can be managed by building a robust network, staying updated on industry trends, and maintaining clear, consistent communication with both clients and candidates. Leveraging recruitment technologies and developing strong consultative relationships also help recruiters address these issues and achieve successful long-term placements.

What is the difference between Permanent Recruitment vs Temporary Staffing?

AspectPermanent RecruitmentTemporary Staffing

Recruitment ProcessIn-depth screening, interviews, onboardingQuick placement, less extensive screening

Permanent Recruitment focuses on hiring employees for long-term roles, offering stability and integration into the company. Temporary Staffing provides short-term solutions, ideal for project-based needs or covering absences. Both methods serve different strategic purposes depending on organizational needs.

Job description

Senior Consultant Permanent Recruitment
New York Hybrid
$80,000-$90,000 base + uncapped commission
At Joss Search, we're trusted by some of the most respected private equity and alternative investment firms in the world to recruit the talent that keeps their businesses running.
Our New York permanent team is growing, and we're looking for an experienced recruiter who can hit the ground running. This isn't a role for someone learning the basics of recruitment. We need a true 360 or 270 consultant who is comfortable owning the entire hiring process, building trusted client relationships, and delivering exceptional candidates in a fast-paced market.
The Opportunity
Our business is growing rapidly and demand from our clients continues to increase. You'll inherit active vacancies from day one and have the opportunity to make an immediate impact.
This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a high-performance environment, enjoys working with premium clients and candidates, and wants the autonomy to run their own desk while being supported by an established brand and team.
What You'll Be Doing
  • Managing the full recruitment lifecycle from client intake through to offer and placement
  • Taking ownership of live search assignments from your first month
  • Building strong relationships with both clients and candidates
  • Advising clients on hiring strategy, market conditions and talent availability
  • Delivering high-quality shortlists within tight timeframes
  • Negotiating offers and managing the process through to successful placement

What We're Looking For
You'll likely have:
  • 3+ years of 360 or 270 permanent recruitment experience
  • A proven track record of managing client relationships directly
  • Experience running end-to-end recruitment processes independently
  • Strong commercial awareness and a consultative approach
  • A history of billing $400,000+ annually (or equivalent performance level)
  • The ability to manage multiple live searches at pace without sacrificing quality

Highly desirable:
  • Experience recruiting Executive Assistants, Business Support or Operations professionals
  • Exposure to Private Equity, Alternative Investments or Financial Services clients
  • Experience working within a high-performance recruitment agency environment

What Success Looks Like
  • Taking ownership of a portfolio of live roles within your first 30 days
  • Building credibility with clients quickly
  • Consistently delivering high-quality candidate shortlists
  • Generating significant placement revenue and developing long-term client relationships

What's In It For You?
  • $80,000-$90,000 base salary
  • Uncapped commission
  • Established client relationships and active vacancies
  • Premium private equity and alternative investment clients
  • Employee-owned Business Model
  • Great benefits including medical, 401k, 19days PTO and much more
  • Hybrid working (3 days in our Manhattan office)
  • A collaborative, high-performing team environment
  • Clear progression opportunities within a growing business

If you're an experienced recruiter who loves delivery, thrives on pace, and enjoys partnering with sophisticated clients and candidates, we'd love to hear from you.
