What is a perioperative support tech?

A Perioperative Support Tech is a healthcare professional who assists surgical teams by preparing operating rooms, transporting patients, and maintaining sterile environments before, during, and after surgical procedures. Their responsibilities often include setting up surgical instruments, ensuring proper equipment functioning, and handling specimens. They play a crucial role in supporting nurses and surgeons to ensure that surgeries run smoothly and safely. This position requires attention to detail, effective communication, and adherence to strict safety protocols.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a perioperative support tech?

To thrive as a Perioperative Support Tech, you need knowledge of surgical procedures, sterile technique, and basic patient care, often supported by a high school diploma and on-the-job training or relevant certification. Familiarity with surgical instruments, sterilization equipment, and hospital information systems is typically required. Strong attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication help you excel in fast-paced surgical environments. These skills are crucial for maintaining patient safety, supporting surgical teams, and ensuring efficient operating room operations.

What are the most common challenges perioperative support techs face during surgical procedures, and how are they addressed?

These challenges are typically addressed through thorough training, clear communication with the surgical team, and following established checklists and procedures. Techs work closely with nurses and surgeons to anticipate needs and ensure all equipment and supplies are ready, which helps minimize delays and maintain patient safety.
