A Brief Overview
The Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (DCAPBS) at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) is seeking a perinatal psychologist to join the Richard D. Wood Jr. Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment team as part of our ongoing efforts to further expand the integration of behavioral health providers into various services across the hospital. The position is full-time, providing opportunities for clinical work, teaching/training, and collaborative research. (CUT) Psychologists also participate in teaching and training activities through our APA and ACGME-accredited clinical psychology and child and adolescent psychiatry training programs, as well as an extensive psychology internship program.
Richard D. Wood Jr. Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment
The Department of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences and the Richard D. Wood Jr. Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) are seeking a licensed psychologist with expertise in pediatric, clinical, medical, and women’s health psychology.
The psychologist will work as part of the psychosocial support team within the Richard D. Wood Jr. Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment (CFDT), a center that specializes in caring for pregnant patients carrying babies with prenatally diagnosed fetal abnormalities. The psychologist position will focus on providing outpatient individual and couples psychotherapy services and offering specific interventions for antepartum patients experiencing maternal and fetal complications while preparing expectant parents for intrauterine procedures, labor and delivery, and the transition into ICU parenting. The Garbose Family Special Delivery Unit (SDU) is the world’s first birthing unit dedicated to healthy mothers of babies with known birth defects. It is located in a pediatric hospital. The psychologist will collaborate closely with the inpatient multidisciplinary team of maternal-fetal medicine providers, obstetricians, certified nurse midwives, and nurses to care for pregnant patients on bedrest and in the immediate postpartum period. The position will also include supporting grieving parents as they consider pregnancy options, cope with selection reduction procedures, or experience an unexpected loss in pregnancy or of their newborn.
The psychologist will collaborate with psychosocial and multidisciplinary care teams in both settings. The position will include the assessment and treatment of expectant parents in the prenatal period following a diagnosis of a fetal abnormality, and with postpartum parents and other caregivers while their baby receives care in either the newborn/infant or cardiac intensive care unit. The provider will assess for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders and offer short-term interventions to parents and couples at risk. The position will also include co-facilitation of parent support groups as well as continuity of postpartum services for identified families, with a primary focus on emotional coping and supporting the continued stressors of ICU parenting.
What you will do
Clinical Activity
- Provides comprehensive assessment and treatment services to expectant parents, in inpatient and outpatient settings, and communicates with referral sources as indicated
- Performs clinical services at a percent of effort as designated by supervisor.
- Adheres to DCAPBS productivity standards.
- In settings where patients are scheduled into appointments, presents an Epic schedule that rolls out, per department/division guidelines, delineating availability and anticipated vacation and conference time. The schedule must include enough openings to cover productivity expectations plus anticipated late cancellations/no-shows.
- Follows all CHOP and DCAPBS policies and procedures regarding clinical and administrative activity associated with providing direct patient care.
- Assure that professional practice is in accordance with applicable professional and licensing body standards
- Practices as an Independent Clinician
- Assures that CHOP, DCAPBS, Joint Commission, and other regulatory body patient care standards are met.
- Assures that all CHOP and DCAPBS clinical and billing documentation standards are met
- Assures that all of the above standards are met through regular and periodic direct observation of clinical activity, chart review, and discussion with non-DCAPBS team members.
- May serve in clinical leadership roles such as:
- Developing clinical and treatment protocols, peer education programs, and monitoring compliance through direct observation and chart review
- Collaborating with other DCAPBS clinicians to operationalize and grow empirically-based models of care that best serve the needs of patients
- Acting as a resource and mentor for DCAPBS clinicians
- Demonstrating leadership in developing programs and designing/executing QI and/or patient safety initiatives
Collaboration
- Collaborate with DCAPBS and other Department/Division colleagues to ensure that patients receive care consistent with patient circumstances and needs.
- Respond to requests for consultation and service promptly.
- Participates in DCAPBS and CHOP committees in membership and/or leadership capacity
- Work collaboratively with the DCAPBS administration to support patients in being appropriately scheduled.
- Attends and participates in department/division/institution meetings appropriate for or required by the role.
Teaching
- Participates in education and training within the department’s training programs. This may include providing clinical supervision, lectures, and facilitated learning experiences
- Establishes themselves as providing high-quality educational experiences for department trainees
- Contributes to interprofessional training activities and experiences
- Participates in activities of the training faculty
- Engages in professional activities
- Membership in national professional organizations, for example, American Psychological Association (APA)
- Active in multiple DCAPBS, CHOP, regional, and national activities
- Participates in the dissemination of psychological science and/or clinical care at a local, regional, or national level

- Completes all mandatory education requirements, annual PPD testing, flu vaccine, and other vaccinations as per CHOP policy
