What is a performance manager?

A performance manager seeks to create a system in which employees can perform at their best by creating clear goals and expectations. Rather than a traditional corporate system of employee appraisal and evaluation, performance managers try to communicate end goals and align each employee’s work with these aims. In this role, you may seek the development of benchmarks so that the company’s departments or groups can measure their progress concretely. This is an ongoing effort. Benchmarks and goals must change, so you must continually find new ways to measure progress and to inspire effort.

How does a performance manager typically collaborate with other departments to drive organizational success?

Performance Managers work closely with leaders and teams across departments—such as HR, operations, and finance—to align performance metrics with organizational goals. They often facilitate regular meetings to review progress, provide feedback, and identify areas for improvement. This role requires strong communication skills and the ability to translate data insights into actionable strategies that support both team development and business objectives. Effective collaboration ensures that performance initiatives are integrated and sustained throughout the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a performance manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Performance Manager, you need a strong background in analytics, goal-setting frameworks, and organizational development, often supported by a degree in business or human resources. Familiarity with performance management systems, HR analytics tools, and project management software is typically required. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities set standout candidates apart in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for driving employee productivity, aligning team objectives with organizational goals, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

What is the difference between Performance Manager vs Performance Analyst?

AspectPerformance ManagerPerformance Analyst

Work EnvironmentOversees teams, collaborates with management, develops performance strategiesAnalyzes data, prepares reports, supports performance improvement initiatives
Employer & Industry UsageCommon in HR, corporate, and organizational settingsUsed in similar environments, often within HR, operations, or consulting firms

The Performance Manager focuses on developing and implementing performance strategies across teams, while the Performance Analyst primarily analyzes data to support performance improvements. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and are integral to organizational success, but they differ in scope and daily responsibilities.

Manager, Performance

About the Role

At the heart of our agency's mission is a commitment to connecting our clients' business goals directly to high-impact media execution, ensuring every media dollar spent is accountable to meaningful business outcomes.

As theManager, Performance, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring that our performance media campaigns are effectively executed, continuously optimized, and meticulously aligned with our clients' business objectives. Operating at the intersection of strategy, execution, and measurement, you will act as the critical day-to-day link between our Planning, Analytics, and Activation teams.

This is a hands-on, highly analytical, and execution-focused role. You will be deeply embedded within key client accounts, responsible for translating high-level strategic direction into tangible, real-time performance improvements. By enforcing robust measurement frameworks, running test-and-learn programs, and analyzing data trends, you will ensure our performance strategy consistently delivers measurable business impact.

What You'll Be Doing (Key Responsibilities)

  • Campaign Execution & Optimization:Oversee real-time performance analysis and tactical adjustments across active campaigns, ensuring all media investments are actively steered to drive measurable business outcomes.
  • Performance Measurement & Reporting:Ensure client KPI frameworks are strictly followed. Work hand-in-hand with the Analytics team to track performance trends, interpret data, and quickly apply actionable insights to improve campaign efficiency.
  • Cross-Team Collaboration:Act as the primary, day-to-day connection point between our internal Planning, Analytics, and Activation teams to ensure the seamless execution of the overall performance strategy.
  • Client Engagement & Support:Collaborate closely with day-to-day client teams to translate strategic concepts into execution plans, ensuring their media investments deliver clear, demonstrable impact.
  • Test & Learn Implementation:Own the execution of client testing roadmaps, ensuring that structured tests (A/B testing, audience testing, creative testing) are executed flawlessly and that key learnings are integrated into future campaign optimizations.
  • Market & Competitive Research:Stay ahead of industry trends, platform updates, and competitive activity. Proactively leverage these insights and research to refine and elevate our performance media strategies.
  • Tactical Strategy Support:Assist senior leadership with budget forecasting, audience segmentation, and media planning to ensure tactical execution remains perfectly aligned with broader strategic priorities.
  • Ad Hoc Strategic Support:Provide performance media expertise and hands-on support for additional strategic planning efforts and ad hoc client requests as needed.

Who You Are (Your Skills & Experience)

We are looking for an analytical, detail-oriented, and collaborative performance marketer who loves turning data into strategic action. To be successful in this role, you will need to demonstrate the following capabilities:

Core Capabilities:

  • Performance Media Execution:Deep tactical understanding of digital performance channels (Search, Social, Programmatic, Video, and/or Commerce) and how they function together in an omnichannel ecosystem.
  • Campaign Effectiveness Optimization:Proven ability to analyze live campaign data, identify performance bottlenecks, and execute swift, strategic optimizations to improve ROI.
  • Cross-Team Collaboration:Strong collaboration skills with a track record of successfully bringing together Planning, Activation, and Analytics disciplines to deliver integrated work.
  • Data & Analytics Interpretation:Highly analytical mindset with the ability to look at complex performance dashboards, extract the "so what?", and turn data points into clear strategic recommendations.
  • Performance Measurement & KPI Alignment:Solid understanding of modern measurement frameworks, tracking methodologies, and how digital media KPIs align with overall business objectives.
  • Research & Trend Analysis:Skilled in using industry research tools and competitive intelligence to find audience insights and identify emerging media trends.

How this role differs from other disciplines in our agency:

  • vs. Planning:While Planning focuses on defining the overall media mix and brand-level audience targeting, you focus on ensuring those plans are translated into highly accountable, performance-driven tactics.
  • vs. Biddable/Activation:While Activation specialists execute inside the media platforms, you look across all platforms holistically, ensuring that channel optimizations are working in harmony to deliver on the client's business-level KPIs.
  • vs. Analytics:While Analytics builds the data models and dashboards, you interpret that data day-to-day to make real-time optimization decisions and strategic campaign adjustments.
