What is a performance engineering manager?

Performance Engineering Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing teams that ensure software applications and systems operate efficiently and reliably under expected workloads. They focus on optimizing performance, scalability, and stability by identifying bottlenecks, setting performance standards, and implementing best practices. These managers collaborate closely with development, QA, and operations teams to deliver high-performing products, often leveraging tools for monitoring and analysis. Their role also includes mentoring engineers, managing project timelines, and communicating performance goals to stakeholders.

How does a performance engineering manager typically collaborate with development and operations teams to ensure optimal system performance?

A Performance Engineering Manager works closely with both development and operations teams to establish performance benchmarks, identify potential bottlenecks early in the software development lifecycle, and implement performance testing protocols. This role often involves facilitating regular meetings to review performance metrics, coordinating load and stress testing efforts, and providing actionable feedback for code optimization. By fostering open communication and aligning goals across teams, the Performance Engineering Manager ensures that performance considerations are integrated into every stage of product development and deployment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a performance engineering manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Performance Engineering Manager, you need a solid background in software engineering, performance testing, and systems optimization, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as JMeter, LoadRunner, APM solutions, and cloud platforms is typically required, along with knowledge of performance monitoring and automation frameworks. Strong leadership, analytical thinking, and effective communication are critical soft skills for guiding teams and collaborating across departments. These skills ensure the delivery of high-performing software solutions, drive continuous improvement, and help meet business scalability and reliability goals.

Job description

Mission

4MINDS is an enterprise AI fine-tuning platform that transforms how organizations build and operate private, domain-specific AI. Unlike static systems, 4MINDSโ€™ AI platform learns continuously from live data in real time and can be deployed on-prem or your cloud provider.

Role Overview

As an Engineering Manager at 4MINDSAI, you will lead the engineering team responsible for building and operating one of the most technically ambitious AI platforms in the enterprise market. You will own the people, processes, and delivery systems that keep a fast-moving team aligned, productive, and shipping with confidence across a multi-cloud and on-premises architecture that most engineering organizations have never encountered.

This is 50%/50% of your time spent on hands-on technical contribution help drive where AI is going. The other 50% is spent building the operational maturity that a team at this stage needs: sprint discipline, release communication, incident response, and the engineering culture that sustains high performance as the team grows. You will inherit a talented team with strong technical instincts and maturing processes, and your job is to accelerate that maturity without slowing down the pace of innovation.

Reporting directly to the CTO, you will partner closely with product leadership to balance feature delivery against technical excellence, and serve as the connective tissue between what engineering builds and what the rest of the business needs to know. You will have purview into sprint planning and backlog prioritization, and will own how engineering communicates its work, its releases, and its incidents to the broader organization.

If you have built process discipline inside genuinely novel technical environments, led teams through the operational growing pains that come with being at the frontier, and know how to raise the bar without losing the culture that got a team this far, this role is built for you.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team of software engineers, owning their performance, growth, and day-to-day productivity across sprint cycles and delivery milestones

  • Drive sprint planning, backlog grooming, sprint reviews, and retrospectives with rigor and consistency

  • Own the release communication process, ensuring the broader organization is informed of what has been built, shipped, and changed with every release cycle

  • Establish and mature incident response protocols, including clear internal communication to sales, customer success, and leadership when platform availability is impacted

  • Partner with the CTO to ruthlessly prioritize engineering work based on business impact, technical debt, and resource constraints

  • Collaborate with product leadership to balance feature delivery with technical excellence and long-term maintainability

  • Own production deployment oversight, ensuring releases meet quality, documentation, and rollback standards before reaching production

  • Build and enforce code review standards that prioritize quality, security, and architectural consistency across the team

  • Remove blockers and facilitate team productivity through daily standups, 1:1s, and cross-team coordination

  • Establish documentation standards for architecture decisions, design rationale, and release notes across the engineering org

  • Track team velocity, sprint health, and delivery metrics, using data to drive continuous process improvement

  • Recruit, onboard, and develop engineering talent as the team scales

  • Serve as the escalation point for engineering incidents, coordinating response and ensuring timely, accurate communication to all affected stakeholders

  • Contribute hands-on technical work approximately 50% of the time, maintaining credibility with the team and staying close to the codebase

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years in an engineering management or technical lead role

  • Proven track record of building and maturing engineering processes in fast-moving, high-growth environments where the operational playbook did not yet exist

  • Experience leading teams through sprint planning, backlog management, and iterative delivery using Agile or similar methodologies

  • Demonstrated ability to establish and enforce release management, code review, and documentation standards across an engineering team

  • Experience building and owning incident response processes, including crossโ€‘functional communication to nonโ€‘engineering stakeholders during outages or degraded service

  • Strong understanding of distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and multiโ€‘cloud or hybrid deployment architectures

  • Ability to contribute handsโ€‘on technical work while maintaining primary focus on people and delivery leadership

  • Experience partnering with product leadership to align engineering priorities with business outcomes

  • Demonstrated ability to use AI tools to accelerate development workflows, with strong judgment about when and how to apply them effectively

  • Ability to communicate technical concepts, release status, and incident updates clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences

  • Deep ownership mindset: you hold yourself and your team accountable to outcomes, not just activity

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field

  • 15+ years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years in engineering management

  • Experience managing engineering teams building AI/ML platforms, data infrastructure, or similarly novel technical architectures

  • Familiarity with knowledge graphs, RAG systems, LLM fineโ€‘tuning workflows, or realโ€‘time data pipelines

  • Experience managing teams operating across multiโ€‘cloud environments including AWS, GCP, Azure, and onโ€‘premises deployments

  • Background establishing engineering culture and process discipline in early stage or highโ€‘growth startups

  • Experience owning or contributing to product roadmap decisions alongside a CPO or product leadership team

  • Track record of recruiting and developing senior engineering talent

  • A history of thoughtfully integrating AI tools into engineering workflows to ship faster without compromising quality

Compensation

  • Base salary range:$180,000- $220,000annually

  • Competitive equity package in ventureโ€‘backed startup

  • Performanceโ€‘based bonus structure

  • Annual meritโ€‘based salary reviews

  • Stock

Benefits

  • 401(k) plan with company match

  • Unlimited PTO policy with15 daysminimum

  • 11 paid company holidays

  • Annual training and certification budget

  • Access to online learning platforms

  • Conference attendance opportunities

  • Regular internal technical workshops and knowledge sharing sessions

Work Environment

  • Location:Onsite in Dallas, Texas

  • High-performance workstations

  • Modern office space in Dallas with standing desks and ergonomics equipment
