Job description

About Blue Robotics
Blue Robotics makes affordable, high-quality hardware and software for marine robotics - from underwater thrusters and ROVs to autonomous surface vehicles and the software that runs them. What does this really mean? We design cool tech for use underwater that allows tons of people and organizations to pursue their audacious dreams of exploring and learning about our oceans and waterways.
About the Role
At Blue Robotics, we enable the field of marine robotics with affordable components and systems. We're currently working in partnership with the Ocean Discovery League on a Deep Ocean Research & Imaging System ("DORIS"). In a nutshell, DORIS is a cutting-edge, low-cost deep sea camera that will revolutionize deep ocean exploration. The project has the potential to dramatically expand deep ocean access. But we need some help fast!
We are looking for a mechanical engineering student in the Los Angeles area to help with the development, field testing, and documentation of this project. This is a very hands-on internship and not for those who might be uncomfortable near the water. We're not sending you down to the bottom of the sea or anything. But it can get bumpy on the boat. ;)
If you have an innate desire to create new things, noodle intently over your projects, and yearn to expand your technical depth and understanding, then we'd love to hear from you!
What You'll Do
  • Design and modify mechanical assemblies, such as pressure-rated enclosures, battery modules, connectors, lights, electronics trays, cameras, and vehicle frames
  • Assist with the assembly of new DORIS units using basic hand tools and 3D printing
  • Build and integrate cable assemblies with soldering, crimping, and connector installation
  • Evaluate system failure modes, create validation plans and support the execution of these plans
  • Test the components and system for performance, durability, and reliability, including lab testing and field testing off a dock and/or boat

Who We're Looking For
  • Currently enrolled in an Engineering degree in a related field (Mechanical Engineering, Eng Phys, Mechatronics, Ocean Engineering, etc.).
  • Comfortable on the water!
  • Proficiency in 3D modeling and drafting of components and assemblies in at least one CAD software package (Solidworks, NX, CATIA, Inventor, Fusion, Onshape, etc).
  • Strong and growing foundation in statics, dynamics, thermodynamics, and engineering materials.
  • Designed, built, and tested some interesting things so far.
  • Deep, insatiable impulse to understand, and leverage that understanding to create new things.
  • Innate desire to collaborate, learn, and adapt.

Perks, Pay & More
  • Pay rate: $25 - $30 USD per hour ; depending on experience
  • Location: This is a fully on-site internship based in Torrance, CA - there's a lot going on and being present is a big part of the experience! We welcome applicants from outside the LA area, though we're unfortunately unable to offer relocation assistance at this time.
  • Approx. Start Date: June 8th, 2026
  • Deadline to apply: May 29th, 2026
  • Hours per week: Minimum 40 hours
  • Duration: 2-3 months
  • Educational reimbursement program
  • Fun, team-building events
  • Paid holidays

How to Apply
Complete our short application and submit both your resume and project portfolio. Project portfolios are accepted in any format; website, document, presentation, github, etc.
The pay range for this role is:
25 - 30 USD per hour (Torrance, CA)
