Guthrie/SUNY Corning Community College Sterile Processing Technician Program

Looking to start a career in healthcare or interested in Sterile Processing? Guthrie has partnered with SUNY Corning Community College's Sterile Processing Program to prepare students directly for the Certification Board Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) Technician Certification Exam.

Work as a per diem Sterile Processing Tech I at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA while attending FREE classes.

Program Details:

  • October 1st - December 10, 2026 (No class November 26th)

    • Class cost covered by Guthrie - FREE to you.

    • Class every Thursday from 9:00am - 3:00pm

    • Class located at the SUNY Surgical Technician Lab at the Elmira Center (318 Madison Ave., Elmira, NY 14901)

  • Limited spots.

  • High school diploma/GED required.

  • Participants must make a per diem commitment to work as a Sterile Processing Tech I at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA.

  • This program is for anyone who is not currently CBSPD Certified but would like to become CBSPD certified.

Position Summary:

The Per Diem Sterile Processing Technician will provide quality processed materials and equipment for safe patient care. 

Education, License & Cert: 

  • High School education or GED required. 

  • Must become central sterile processing certified within 18 months of hire to maintain employment.

Experience: 

  • Must be able to follow detailed written and oral instructions. 

  • Must have good interpersonal skills to effectively interact with all levels of the medical staff.  

  • Prior experience in the medical/surgical field or manufacturing preferred. 

Essential Functions: 

1. Follows Standard Work in the decontamination, assembly, sterilization, highlevel disinfection, and sterile storage areas to properly handle instruments/equipment to provide safe patient care. Utilizes instrument/equipment manufacturer's instructions for use when necessary. 

2. Communicate and work collaboratively with other staff in the department, as well as other units. Represents the department and hospital in a professional, courteous manner. 

3. Attend and participate in departmental inservices, huddles, and meetings.  Understands key quality measures and demonstrate willingness to participate in problem solving and performance improvement activities. 

4. Assist, of necessary, with the orientation of new employees. 

5. Demonstrates effective time management, flexibility, prioritization, and critical thinking skills in performance of duties. 

6. Demonstrates knowledge and maintains competency of standard work / key work processes. 

7. Applies principles of microbiology, disinfection, sterilization, and modes of disease transmission to promote an infection free environment. 

8. Uses proper body mechanics when moving or transferring items to prevent injury to self or others. 

9. Assists in maintaining a clean and safe work environment. 

10. Protects patient privacy and follows hospital/departmental policies and procedures.

1. Demonstrates willingness to accept nonroutine work assignments as appropriate.
