Job Summary

The Lead Dermatology Billing Specialist at Arizona Center for Cancer Care (AZCCC) is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day performance of the practice's billing and coding operations, including direct supervision of the Insurance A/R Biller and Coder team. This role ensures accurate charge capture and coding, timely and clean claims submission, effective denial management, and healthy accounts receivable performance. The billing specialist- lead serves as the primary point of escalation for complex coding and payer issues, monitoring key revenue cycles metrics and reports performance and trends to practice leadership. This role may be performed remotely or in office.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Supervises, trains, and supports the Insurance A/R Biller and Coder team, including daily workflow oversight and ongoing coaching.
  • Reviews and audits medical coding for accuracy, including CPT and ICD-10 code assignment and modifier usage, for dermatology-specific procedures (e.g., biopsies, excisions, Mohs micrographic surgery, cryotherapy, and cosmetic services).
  • Oversees claims submission workflows to ensure clean claims and minimize front-end rejections.
  • Manages complex, escalated, or high-dollar denials and payer disputes, including drafting and reviewing appeal letters with supporting clinical documentation.
  • Monitors accounts receivable aging reports and ensures timely, consistent follow-up on outstanding claims across all payers.
  • Tracks and analyzes denial and rejection trends; partners with front office and scheduling teams to correct root causes such as missing referrals, authorizations, or eligibility issues.
  • Serves as the practice's subject matter expert on dermatology-specific coding and payer billing requirements.
  • Ensures billing and coding practices comply with HIPAA, CMS regulations, payer guidelines, and internal compliance policies.
  • Prepares and presents revenue cycle performance reports to practice leadership, including collection rates, days in A/R, denial rates, and outstanding balances.
  • Serves as the primary point of contact for billing-related issues within the EMR/practice management system (ModMed), coordinating with IT or the vendor as needed.
  • Reviews and approves adjustments and write-offs within designated authority levels.
  • Supports credentialing and payer enrollment coordination as needed.
  • Performs hands-on billing and coding duties directly, as volume or staffing needs require.
  • Stays current on dermatology coding updates, payer policy changes, and industry best practices, and communicates relevant changes to the billing team.
  • Conducts regular team meetings and contributes to performance evaluations for billing staff.
  • Responds to patient billing inquiries that have been escalated beyond the initial biller.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications and Educational Requirement

  • High School Diploma or GED required; Associate's degree in health information management, medical billing/coding, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of medical billing and coding experience required, with dermatology-specific experience required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years in a lead, supervisory, or senior billing role required.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong knowledge of dermatology-specific CPT and ICD-10 coding, including lesion excisions, Mohs micrographic surgery, and phototherapy.
