Job description

Nursing Assistant

The Ventura County Health Care Agency (HCA) is an integrated public health care system committed to providing high-quality, compassionate care to the diverse communities of Ventura County through its hospitals, ambulatory care clinics, behavioral health services, public health programs, and health plan. The agency includes Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC), the county's premier academic teaching hospital and designated Level II Trauma Center, and Santa Paula Hospital (SPH), a modern community hospital that provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services, including emergency care and specialty services. Together, VCMC and SPH are dedicated to delivering exceptional patient care, advancing medical education, and improving the health and well-being of Ventura County residents.

Under the general supervision of a licensed nurse, incumbents perform a variety of clinical support and patient assistance duties in inpatient nursing units throughout Ventura County Medical Center and Santa Paula Hospital. Incumbents assist professional nursing staff in maintaining a safe, efficient, and patient-centered care environment by providing support services, responding to patient needs within the scope of the classification, and performing other related duties as assigned.

Nursing Assistant II: $23.80 - $32.56 hourly

Nursing Assistant Per Diem Pool: $23.00 hourly

Agency/Department: Health Care Agency โ€“ Ventura County Medical Center/Santa Paula Hospital

Nursing Assistant II and Nursing Assistant Per Diem Pool are represented by the Service Employees' International Union (SEIU) and are eligible for overtime compensation.

This classification is within a bargaining unit that is subject to an agency shop arrangement which mandates a Regular employee to either join Local 721 of SEIU and pay dues as a member OR either pay a service fee to Local 721 or direct that an amount equivalent to the service fee be distributed to a qualified charitable organization.

The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-Term), Intermittent, and Extra-Help vacancies. There is currently one (1) Regular vacancy in Med Surg.

Tentative Schedule Opening Date: 7/07/2026 Closing Date: Continuous and may close at any time; therefore, the schedule for the remainder of the process will depend upon when we receive a sufficient number of qualified applications to meet business needs.

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Takes blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and respiration of patients;
  • Prepares patients and assists in their feeding;
  • Weighs, bathes, and dresses patients; performs oral hygiene; changes linens and makes patients' beds;
  • Performs patient routine care; performs postmortem duties and responsibilities; may provide some support in a critical care area;
  • Passes bedpans and operates mechanical lifts;
  • May chart patient vital signs, intake, and out-put; observes and reports any unusual circumstances or changes in patient condition;
  • May provide limited clerical support;
  • Transports patients as needed for admission, discharge, procedures, etc.;
  • Assists with ambulatory patients;
  • Maintains a safe environment; and
  • Performs other related duties as required.

These are entrance requirements to the examination process and ensure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.

Education, Training, and Experience:

  • At least six (6) months of experience as a Nursing Assistant I at the Ventura County Medical Center or comparable work experience; OR
  • A Certificate as an Emergency Medical Technician; OR
  • A combination of comparable work experience/coursework (e.g., 3 months' experience as a Nursing Assistant plus Emergency Medical Technician coursework); OR
  • Nursing Assistant Certification (CNA Certificate) issued by the California Department of Consumer Affairs.

Necessary Special Requirements:

  • Must have a valid Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certificate issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross by the first day of employment and maintain it thereafter.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of methods, procedures, and equipment utilized in nursing assistant work to provide direct patient care.
  • Considerable ability to stand, bend, reach, squat and kneel to move, position and lift patients and/or equipment to perform nursing assistant duties/procedures;
  • Maintain the confidence of and effective relationships with staff and patients;
  • Work in various departments as required.

Supplemental Information:

In some cases, Nursing Assistants may be trained for phlebotomy and electrocardiogram.
