What is a per diem physician?

A Per Diem Physician is a medical doctor who works on an as-needed or 'per day' basis, rather than holding a full-time or part-time permanent position. These physicians typically fill in for regular staff during absences, busy periods, or to cover short-term needs at hospitals, clinics, or other healthcare facilities. Per Diem Physicians enjoy flexible schedules and may work at multiple locations, but their hours and benefits can vary depending on the employer. This role is ideal for those seeking variety, supplemental income, or a better work-life balance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem physician?

To thrive as a Per Diem Physician, you need a valid medical degree, board certification, and clinical experience in your specialty. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, hospital protocols, and common clinical tools is typically required. Strong adaptability, communication, and time management skills help you excel as you move between varied clinical environments and teams. These competencies are crucial for delivering consistent, high-quality patient care and integrating effectively into diverse healthcare settings on short notice.

How does the scheduling process typically work for per diem physicians, and what level of flexibility can I expect?

Per diem physicians usually enjoy significant flexibility in their work schedules, as they are hired to fill in staffing gaps on an as-needed basis. Scheduling is often coordinated through hospital staffing departments or third-party agencies, and you may be able to select shifts that fit your availability. However, popular shifts may fill quickly, and last-minute requests can occur, so adaptability is important. This setup is ideal for those seeking variety and autonomy, but it also means that consistent hours and benefits are less common than in full-time roles.

Can you work per diem as a physician?

Yes, physicians can work per diem, which involves taking on temporary or as-needed shifts without a fixed schedule. Per diem work offers flexibility and often requires maintaining current licensure, certifications, and familiarity with hospital or clinic protocols.
