What is a per diem pharmacy tech?

A Per Diem Pharmacy Tech is a pharmacy technician who works on an as-needed basis rather than a set full-time or part-time schedule. They often fill in for regular staff during busy periods, employee absences, or special projects. Per diem pharmacy techs may work in hospitals, retail pharmacies, or other healthcare settings and typically have flexible schedules. Their responsibilities are similar to regular pharmacy technicians, including assisting pharmacists, preparing medications, and managing inventory.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem pharmacy tech?

To thrive as a Per Diem Pharmacy Tech, you need a solid understanding of pharmacy operations, medication dispensing, and typically a Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) or state licensure. Familiarity with pharmacy management systems, automated dispensing machines, and medication labeling tools is usually required. Strong attention to detail, reliability, and excellent communication skills are critical soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure accurate medication handling, compliance with regulations, and dependable support for pharmacists in dynamic work settings.

How does the flexible scheduling of a per diem pharmacy tech position impact workflow and team collaboration?

Per Diem Pharmacy Techs often work on an as-needed basis, which offers flexibility but can also mean adapting quickly to different shifts and work environments. Because their schedules vary, these techs need strong communication skills to stay updated on pharmacy protocols and patient needs. They frequently collaborate with full-time staff, stepping in to support high-volume periods or cover absences, which requires adaptability and the ability to quickly integrate into existing workflows. This role is ideal for those who enjoy dynamic environments and can build rapport with new team members quickly.
