How much do part time pharmacy tech jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 30, 2026, the average hourly pay for part time pharmacy tech in the United States is $19.27, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.83 and $20.43 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Which pharmacy tech position pays the most?

Senior or lead pharmacy technician roles typically offer the highest pay among pharmacy technician positions, often due to increased responsibilities, experience requirements, and supervisory duties. Specialized roles such as sterile compounding or working in hospital settings may also command higher wages compared to standard retail pharmacy tech positions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Pharmacy Tech, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Pharmacy Tech, you need a solid understanding of pharmacy operations, medication dispensing, and inventory management, typically supported by a high school diploma and a pharmacy technician certification (such as the PTCB). Proficiency with pharmacy management systems, point-of-sale software, and prescription processing tools is commonly required. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and effective customer service are critical soft skills that help you excel in this role. These skills ensure safe and accurate medication handling, regulatory compliance, and positive patient experiences in a busy pharmacy environment.

What are part time pharmacy techs?

Part time pharmacy techs are healthcare professionals who assist pharmacists with preparing and dispensing medications, managing inventory, and providing customer service, but work fewer hours than full-time staff. Their schedules can be flexible, often covering evenings, weekends, or busy shifts. They play a crucial role in ensuring prescriptions are filled accurately and efficiently, while also helping with administrative tasks such as record-keeping and insurance processing. Part time pharmacy techs must usually meet the same certification or licensure requirements as full-time techs, depending on state regulations.

How much does a pharmacy tech make?

The average hourly wage for a pharmacy technician in Alabama is around $13 to $15, with annual salaries approximately $27,000 to $31,000. Salaries can vary based on experience, certification, and work setting, such as retail or hospital pharmacies.

What other jobs can pharmacy techs do?

Pharmacy technicians can transition into roles such as pharmacy assistants, medication aides, or pharmacy clerks, often utilizing their knowledge of medications and customer service skills. They may also pursue certifications to move into pharmacy automation, inventory management, or pharmaceutical sales positions, depending on their interests and additional training.

The main difference between a Part Time Pharmacy Tech and a Full Time Pharmacy Tech lies in their work hours. Both roles require similar certifications and perform comparable duties in pharmacy settings. Part Time Pharmacy Techs work fewer hours, offering flexibility, while Full Time Pharmacy Techs work longer hours, often with additional benefits.

What are some common challenges faced by part-time pharmacy technicians, and how can they be managed?

Part-time pharmacy technicians often face challenges such as adapting quickly to changing shifts, staying updated on pharmacy procedures, and efficiently managing busy periods with limited hours. Building strong communication with full-time staff and pharmacists is key to staying informed and ensuring smooth workflow. Proactively reviewing updated protocols and being flexible with scheduling can help manage these challenges and support effective teamwork.

Can a pharmacy tech work part-time?

Yes, pharmacy technicians can work part-time hours. Many pharmacy techs work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, or reduced hours, depending on the employer's needs and the technician's availability.
