What does a per diem pharmacist do?

“Per diem” is Latin, meaning “per day;” a per diem pharmacist has identical duties and responsibilities to those of a normal pharmacist, but the terms of their employment differ. As a per diem pharmacist, you fill and refill prescriptions for medications, provide important information and education to each patient, and carefully track and monitor controlled substances. As a per diem employee, you are contracted on a daily basis, frequently picking up irregular shifts. While this arrangement can provide flexibility, it can also be limiting, as your ability to plan for other work is severely curtailed. Additionally, per diem employees are not provided with health care or similar benefits afforded to full-time employees.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem pharmacist?

To thrive as a Per Diem Pharmacist, you need a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree, active pharmacist licensure, and thorough knowledge of medication therapy and pharmacy law. Familiarity with pharmacy management systems (like Epic or Cerner), automated dispensing cabinets, and immunization certifications are typically required. Strong attention to detail, adaptability, and effective communication skills help you excel in various pharmacy settings and quickly integrate with different teams. These competencies ensure safe, accurate medication dispensing and high-quality patient care, even when working on an as-needed basis.

What are some common challenges faced by per diem pharmacists, and how can they effectively adapt to different pharmacy environments?

Per Diem Pharmacists often work in various settings, such as hospitals, retail pharmacies, or clinics, which can present challenges like adapting quickly to new workflows, software systems, and team dynamics. To succeed, it's important to be flexible, maintain strong communication skills, and stay up-to-date with current pharmacy practices. Building a solid foundation in standard procedures and being proactive in asking questions can help Per Diem Pharmacists integrate smoothly into new environments and provide high-quality patient care.

The main difference between a Per Diem Pharmacist and a Staff Pharmacist lies in their work schedule and employment type. Per Diem Pharmacists work on a flexible, shift-by-shift basis, often filling in for staff as needed, while Staff Pharmacists typically hold full-time or part-time permanent positions within a single pharmacy or organization. Both roles require a valid pharmacist license and are common in various healthcare settings.
