What is a per diem patient service representative?

A Per Diem Patient Service Representative is a healthcare professional who works on an as-needed basis to assist with administrative tasks in medical settings, such as hospitals, clinics, or physician offices. Their duties often include greeting patients, scheduling appointments, verifying insurance, and handling patient inquiries. Because they work per diem, their hours are flexible and may vary based on the needs of the facility. This role is ideal for those seeking part-time, flexible work while still being involved in patient care support.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem patient service representative?

To thrive as a Per Diem Patient Service Representative, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a high school diploma or equivalent, with some employers preferring prior healthcare administrative experience. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) systems, scheduling software, and basic office equipment is typically required. Excellent communication, customer service, and multitasking abilities help you handle patient inquiries and collaborate effectively with clinical staff. These skills are crucial for ensuring smooth patient flow, accurate records, and a positive experience in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

What are the typical scheduling expectations and challenges for a per diem patient service representative?

Per Diem Patient Service Representatives are generally scheduled on an as-needed basis, which means shifts can be variable and may include early mornings, evenings, or weekends. This flexibility can be ideal for those seeking work-life balance, but it can also require adaptability to last-minute schedule changes or covering shifts on short notice. It's important to communicate your availability clearly and to be prepared for periods of both high and low demand. Additionally, per diem roles often involve working with different teams and adapting quickly to various workflows within the healthcare setting.
