What is a per diem firefighter?

A Per Diem Firefighter is a firefighter who works on an as-needed basis, typically filling in for full-time staff during absences or periods of high demand. They perform the same duties as regular firefighters, including emergency response, fire suppression, medical aid, and equipment maintenance. Per diem firefighters may work flexible or irregular shifts, depending on departmental needs. This role is ideal for those seeking experience in firefighting without a full-time commitment.

What is a typical work schedule like for a per diem firefighter, and how does it differ from full-time roles?

Per Diem Firefighters work on an as-needed basis, filling in for regular staff during busy periods, vacations, or absences, which means their schedules can vary week to week. Unlike full-time firefighters with set rotations, per diem staff may be contacted on short notice and need to be flexible with availability, including nights, holidays, and weekends. This arrangement offers the opportunity to gain diverse experience across different shifts and stations, making it ideal for those who want flexibility or are building their firefighting careers. The work structure also allows per diem firefighters to remain active in the field while balancing other personal or professional commitments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem firefighter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Per Diem Firefighter, you need strong physical fitness, emergency response skills, and foundational knowledge in fire science, often supported by Firefighter I/II certifications and EMT credentials. Experience with firefighting equipment, incident command systems, and emergency medical tools is typically required. Reliability, adaptability, and teamwork are essential soft skills, as the role often involves quickly integrating into existing teams and responding to unpredictable situations. These abilities are critical for ensuring safety, effective emergency response, and seamless cooperation in high-stress environments.

Is 27 too late to be a per diem firefighter?

Per diem firefighters can typically start at age 18 or older, with 27 being a common age to begin. Age requirements vary by department, but many agencies value experience and physical fitness over age, so starting at 27 is generally not too late for this role. Certifications such as EMT or firefighter training are often required regardless of age.
