Pay Range

$35.50 - $53.25

Job Summary:

Performs a variety of laboratory examinations and tests including specialized or experimental procedures assuring rapid and accurate results. Is responsible for all technical aspects in the operation of special chemistry services to include training and competency assessment of lab technical staff.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provides specific orientation, training, and competency assessment for all new department employees under the supervision of the Core Lab Manager.
  • Conducts at least one hour of an approved continuing education program annually and participates in at least eighteen (18) contact hours of continuing education programs annually.
  • Performs, reviews, and reports laboratory tests according to laboratories policies and procedures.
  • Reviews and takes corrective action on all unusual, abnormal, and critical results.
  • Support technical expertise to employees and medical staff concerning lab tests performed in the Core Laboratory department.
  • Liaisons with Core Lab Manager on workstation organization, problem solving, and productivity.
  • Completes workload in a timely manner
  • Conducts annual competency checks for all employees in the core lab department performing special chemistry tests under the supervision of the Core Lab Manager.
  • Prepares, distributes, and evaluates special chemistry tests for new employee training and student teaching.
  • Assists with performance evaluation reviews for technical performance and maintaining procedure manuals current and accurate.
  • Aids Core Lab Manager in special projects such as implementing new equipment, seeking, and researching new technology that will improve or expand current lab testing capabilities.
  • Reviews unusual or abnormal results and take corrective action.
  • Troubleshoots equipment and QC failures.
  • Understand computer downtime procedures.
  • Supports and maintains a positive work environment by communicating and enforcing all established departmental and hospital policies.
  • Communicates effectively with peers.
  • Maintain appropriate supply inventory, restocks workstation, and assists Core Lab Manager in supply management of reagents and cost per test.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • Registration as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MT, MLS, CLT, CLS) by the Board of Registry as ASCP, AMT, AAB (AAB with 15yrs.experience), NCA, or HHS certification or equivalent.

Education Required:

  • Baccalaureate degree from accredited college or university in Medical Laboratory Science leading to ASCP certification or equivalent as determined by the Professional Director.

Experience Required:

  • Minimum 4 years of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist in a Hospital laboratory.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Works in a fast-paced clinical environment. Works in an area which contains biohazardous (infectious) materials along with chemical, fire, and mechanical hazards. Duties may involve standing, walking, stretching, stooping, bending, and lifting light (20 pounds) to moderate heavy (50 pounds) loads. Must be able to use visual acuity to see monitor screen, computer, and hard copy materials. Must be able to hear and verbally communicate in person and over the phone or radio. Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time (up to 2 hours).
