Is AI going to replace pathology?

AI is increasingly used as a tool to assist anatomic pathologists by improving diagnostic accuracy and efficiency, but it is not expected to fully replace the role. What is a Per Diem Anatomic Pathologist?

A Per Diem Anatomic Pathologist is a medical doctor who specializes in diagnosing diseases by examining tissues, organs, and bodily fluids, and works on an as-needed or temporary basis rather than as a full-time staff member. They are often called in to provide coverage when regular staff are unavailable or to help manage fluctuating workloads. The 'per diem' status allows for flexibility in scheduling, making it an attractive option for pathologists seeking work-life balance or supplementary income. Their responsibilities typically include interpreting biopsies, conducting autopsies, and collaborating with other healthcare professionals to guide patient care.

How many hours per week does a pathologist work?

Per Diem Anatomic Pathologists typically work variable hours depending on case volume and facility needs, often including standard full-time hours of around 40 hours per week. However, as per diem roles usually involve flexible scheduling, some pathologists may work fewer or more hours based on assignments and personal availability.

Is there a shortage of pathologists?

The demand for anatomic pathologists remains high due to increasing healthcare needs and a growing aging population. Many regions experience a shortage of qualified pathologists, leading to increased job opportunities and competitive salaries for those in the field. Staying certified and gaining subspecialty expertise can enhance employment prospects.

What are the typical work schedules and responsibilities for a Per Diem Anatomic Pathologist?

As a Per Diem Anatomic Pathologist, your work schedule is generally flexible, often based on departmental needs or covering for staff absences. You may be asked to interpret surgical pathology and cytology specimens, participate in frozen section consultations, and occasionally engage in multidisciplinary case discussions. While you may not have ongoing administrative or teaching duties, strong communication with laboratory staff, clinicians, and other pathologists is essential for accurate and timely diagnoses. The role is ideal for those seeking variety and the ability to balance work with other professional or personal commitments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Per Diem Anatomic Pathologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Per Diem Anatomic Pathologist, you need board certification in anatomic pathology, strong diagnostic skills, and a thorough understanding of histopathology and cytopathology. Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS), digital pathology platforms, and adherence to regulatory standards are typically required. Exceptional attention to detail, time management, and effective communication with clinical teams are vital soft skills. These competencies ensure accurate, timely diagnoses and support high-quality patient care in a flexible, on-demand work setting.
