What do pediatricians do?

Pediatricians manage the physical and mental health of children. They conduct routine check-ups and diagnose and treat childhood illnesses and injuries. Pediatricians monitor children from birth, checking on their condition in the hospital. As they get older, children visit pediatricians on a regular schedule for physicals and vaccinations. With each visit, the pediatrician tracks the growth and development of the child and discusses any concerns with the parents. Parents rely on pediatricians to help them with more than just physical ailments; pediatricians often provide suggestions and recommendations on a child’s diet, behavior, and development. Family or general practitioners also treat children, but many parents choose to take their kids to pediatricians for more specialized care.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a pediatrician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pediatrician, you need a medical degree, board certification in pediatrics, and strong knowledge of child development and diseases. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and pediatric diagnostic tools is typically required. Excellent communication, patience, and empathy are essential for effectively interacting with children and their families. These skills and qualifications are crucial for accurately diagnosing conditions, providing compassionate care, and building trust with patients and caregivers.

What are some common challenges pediatricians face when communicating with both children and their parents?

Pediatricians often navigate the unique challenge of communicating complex medical information in a way that is reassuring and understandable for both children and their caregivers. Building trust requires adapting language and approach to suit the child's age and developmental stage, while also addressing parents' concerns and expectations. Balancing the needs of the patient and the family, especially in stressful or emotional situations, is a key part of the role. Successful pediatricians develop strong interpersonal and communication skills to foster positive relationships and ensure the best outcomes for their young patients.

What is the difference between Pediatrician vs Family Physician?

The choice depends on the patient's age group and specific health needs.

What jobs are there in pediatrics?

Jobs in pediatrics include pediatrician, pediatric nurse, pediatric nurse practitioner, pediatric physician assistant, pediatric medical researcher, and pediatric subspecialist roles such as pediatric cardiologist or pediatric endocrinologist. These positions typically require specialized medical training, certification, and often involve working in hospitals, clinics, or private practices focused on child health. Skills in patient communication and child development are essential in these roles.

Job description

Metropolitan Pediatrics is looking for dedicated pediatricians to join our team and continue shaping the future of pediatric care here in Oregon. We believe that caring for kids is more than a profession—it’s our calling. And we are dedicated to investing our resources and leadership to enhance the primary care experience for you, and for kids and their families.

With Metro, you’ll join a progressive, physician-led group in a 5-star medical home that’s as committed to your well-being as you are to the kids you serve. We’re looking for passionate pediatricians wanting to make a positive difference for the kids and families we serve.

Why Are We Hiring?

In addition to market expansion into the surrounding Portland metro region, some pediatricians on our legacy team are retiring. We’re welcoming the next generation of pediatric leaders who want to make an impact in a thriving, private practice setting.

Pediatrician Positions Available Now and in the Near Future

We’re actively recruiting board-certified or board-eligible pediatricians who share our values and vision. You’ll join us as a primary care provider, taking on important call and newborn rounding responsibilities. We believe in strong support, so every new physician enjoys a dedicated mentor for at least two years, all within our highly collaborative environment. Plus, you’ll have wonderful opportunities to explore and develop your special areas of interest in your practice.

  • Locations: Multiple clinics throughout the Portland metro area, including Beaverton, Tigard, NW Portland, Gresham, and Happy Valley
  • Start Dates: Rolling hires available through 2026
