How much do pediatric rn jobs pay per week?
What is a pediatric RN?
What does a pediatric RN do?
A pediatric registered nurse (RN) provides medical care for children—infants, young children, and adolescent patients. In this career, you may work for a hospital, physician’s office, or another health care facility that deals with children. Pediatric RNs can also assist physicians and monitor patients in hospital ICUs, surgery centers, and facilities for treating chronic conditions. Your job duties include collecting pertinent data about the patient, assessing each patient’s condition, taking vital signs, looking for developmental issues, and administering immunizations. Children are often anxious or afraid of going to the doctor or hospital; pediatric RNs are trained to help alleviate their fears and make them feel comfortable. You also explain any health issues you find during the examination to the patient’s parents, describing the treatment plan recommended by the doctor and how to provide care at home, if necessary.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a pediatric RN?
What are some common challenges pediatric RNs face when caring for children and their families?
What is the difference between Pediatric Rn vs Pediatric Nurse Practitioner?
| Aspect | Pediatric Rn | Pediatric Nurse Practitioner |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Registered Nurse (RN) license, Pediatric-specific training | RN license, Master's degree or higher, Nurse Practitioner certification |
| Work Environment | Hospitals, clinics, pediatric wards, outpatient settings | Primary care clinics, specialty practices, hospitals, outpatient clinics |
| Responsibilities | Provide basic nursing care, administer medications, assist in procedures | Diagnose illnesses, develop treatment plans, prescribe medications |
The main difference between a Pediatric Rn and a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner is their scope of practice. Pediatric Rns provide essential nursing care under supervision, while Pediatric Nurse Practitioners have advanced training allowing them to diagnose and treat illnesses independently. Both roles are vital in pediatric healthcare, but Nurse Practitioners have a broader scope and more autonomy.

Responsibilities include triage, medication administration, IV starts, monitoring patient responses, assisting with emergency procedures, patient/family education, and maintaining accurate documentation in the electronic medical record.
Job Duties / Responsibilities
- Provide direct, age-appropriate nursing care to infants, children, adolescents, and pediatric patients in the emergency setting.
- Perform rapid assessments, triage patients, and prioritize care based on acuity level.
- Initiate emergency interventions for trauma, respiratory distress, seizures, dehydration, infections, and other urgent conditions.
- Administer medications, IV therapy, blood products, and treatments safely in accordance with provider orders.
- Monitor patient condition, vital signs, pain levels, and response to treatment; report changes promptly.
- Assist physicians and advanced practice providers with procedures such as splinting, suturing, sedation, and resuscitation.
- Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, discharge instructions, and follow-up care.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including respiratory therapy, radiology, lab, case management, and security.
