The professional nurse intern I is a student currently enrolled in an approved diploma, associate, or bachelor's degree nursing program that has no or limited clinical experience. The professional nurse intern I works as an effective member of the nursing team under the direction of a RN preceptor to provide quality, patient-centered nursing care in the assigned nursing unit. The RN preceptor, director of the unit to which the professional nurse intern is assigned, or staff education coordinator will provide supervision to professional nurse intern. The student nurse will not perform any tasks or procedures that require nursing judgment, competency, or licensure as a nurse. This role functions similar to a patient care technician (PCT).

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Caregiver/care provider
  • Coordinates with health care team members to meet patient's needs and notify proper resource when outside of professional nurse intern I's scope of practice.
  • Assist staff with meals by passing out and collecting meal trays as well as documenting patient intake in an accurate and timely manner.
    • Passes meal trays/snacks, ensuring the patient is positioned properly and food is within reach.
    • Feeds patient when necessary in a non-rushed, pleasant manner.
    • Ensures patients have fresh water, as appropriate to fluid intake restrictions and ordered diet
  • Assisting with monitoring intake and output (I&O) and documentation of in medical records in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Obtain vital signs and document in the electronic medical record (EMR) in an accurate and timely manner as well as notify patient's primary care RN of any abnormal vital signs or any changes or concerns with vital signs.
  • Provide or assist patient with personal care specific to time of day, depending on shift worked, and specific to individual patient needs. Including, but not limited to, oral care, denture care, linen change, picking up room, and bathing.
  • Assist with tasks delegated by RN preceptor and unit leadership, within professional nurseextern I's scope of practice.
    • May enhance skillset by providing department director the skills he/she has been evaluated on in current school program. May perform skill in this role once deemed competent by Director, Education coordinator, or competent designee
  • Applies and removes telemetry
  • Perform 12-lead EKG, following competency.
  • Answers patient call lights promptly and courteously
  • Uses proper body mechanics when repositioning a patient or transferring patient from one surface to another.
  • Cleans utensils and equipment properly.
  • Reports changes in patient condition to patients primary care RN or resource RN immediately when observed.
  • Provides care to indwelling urinary catheters (Foley) per policy.
  • Knows proper use and application of patient-safety devices (restraints).
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the supportive equipment used on the nursing unit.
  • Effective time management and organization abilities
  • Responsible use of supplies and equipment.
  • Observes lines of communication as appropriate.
  • Able to efficiently and effectively function in emergent and stressful situations.
  • Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions; ensures compliance with Joint Commission and other external and internal regulatory agencies.
  • Maintains the integrity of confidential patient information in accordance with HIPAA and hospital policy, including accessing, using and disclosing patient information relevant to the individual employee's job duties. Also maintains confidentiality of other customer and hospital business affairs.
  • Adheres to the standards of Magruder Hospital's corporate compliance policies and seeks guidance and training when necessary to resolve questions about the policies. Reports violations in accordance with corporate compliance and organizational standards.
  • Reports to work on time and as scheduled; Shows respect for co-workers by following established break times; Keeps personal conversations and telephone calls to a minimum.
  • Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.
