How much do pcb design engineer jobs pay per year?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PCB design engineer, and why are they important?
What is a PCB design engineer?
A printed circuit board design engineer oversees the creation of printed circuit boards (PCB) used in phones, computers, and most other electronic devices. As a PCB design engineer, your responsibilities include designing the layout of the unit to incorporate the appropriate components, making recommendations to improve existing designs, and overseeing the actual manufacturing of these products to ensure they meet industry and company standards. These boards are the backbone of modern-day electronics, acting as the central unit of anything that runs on a microchip or CPU. You must design the board in such a way that it meets the specific needs of each product. While there is no universal education requirement, most employers prefer at least an associate degree in an electronics or computer science related field. Most PCB design engineers work for computer hardware manufacturers, but some general tech companies have in-house design departments.
What are some common challenges faced by PCB design engineers during the product development cycle?
What is the difference between Pcb Design Engineer vs Electronics Engineer?
| Aspect | Pcb Design Engineer | Electronics Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Focus | Designing printed circuit boards (PCBs) | Designing electronic circuits and systems |
| Skills & Certifications | PCB design software, schematic capture, IPC standards | Circuit theory, component selection, simulation tools |
| Work Environment | Electronics manufacturing, PCB layout firms, R&D labs | Electronics product development, engineering firms, R&D labs |
While both roles involve electronics, a Pcb Design Engineer specializes in creating the physical layout of PCBs, focusing on manufacturability and design standards. An Electronics Engineer designs electronic circuits and systems, often overseeing the entire electronic product development process. Both roles require a strong understanding of electronics, but their daily tasks and focus areas differ significantly.

Our employees are not only part of history, they're making history.
The successful candidate will work closely with Manufacturing Engineering, Quality Engineering, Design Engineering, Test Engineering, Operations, Supply Chain, and Program Management to ensure production readiness, improve manufacturing efficiency, resolve technical issues, and deliver high-quality products supporting customer requirements. The ideal candidate possesses strong technical troubleshooting skills, hands-on electronics manufacturing experience, and the ability to thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced production environment.
This position is located in Warner Robins, Georgia and requires on-site support.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Support Circuit Card Assembly (CCA) production, repair, sustainment, and manufacturing across multiple defense programs, including prototypes, validation, qualification, FAIs, and production implementation.
- Perform component-level troubleshooting and electrical testing of CCAs using schematics, PCB layouts, BOMs, assembly drawings, wiring diagrams, and electronic lab equipment (DMMs, oscilloscopes, power supplies, signal generators, logic analyzers).
- Analyze manufacturing defects, solder anomalies, component failures, and assembly non-conformances to determine root cause and implement corrective actions, leveraging X-ray/CT inspection and failure analysis techniques.
- Lead and support engineering investigations for production defects, customer returns, depot repair findings, and process improvement opportunities.
- Develop, revise, and maintain engineering documentation and configuration control, including repair and manufacturing procedures, work instructions, test procedures, technical reports, engineering drawings, and PLM-driven changes (ECRs/ECNs).
- Participate in PCB design reviews (Altium or equivalent) with focus on manufacturability, repairability, and producibility.
- Provide engineering support for robotics, automated assembly, automated inspection systems, conformal coating processes, and other electronic manufacturing technologies.
- Collaborate with Manufacturing, Quality, Test Engineering, Operations, and suppliers to resolve production issues affecting cost, schedule, quality, reliability, and customer commitments; support supplier evaluations and production readiness reviews.
- Participate in RCCA, MRB, FRB, Lean/continuous improvement initiatives to reduce waste, standardize work, improve processes, and enhance product reliability.
- Ensure compliance with IPC workmanship standards, AS9100, customer specifications, and company engineering procedures while effectively interfacing with internal and external customers in technical reviews and readiness activities.
