What is a PCB design engineer?

A printed circuit board design engineer oversees the creation of printed circuit boards (PCB) used in phones, computers, and most other electronic devices. As a PCB design engineer, your responsibilities include designing the layout of the unit to incorporate the appropriate components, making recommendations to improve existing designs, and overseeing the actual manufacturing of these products to ensure they meet industry and company standards. These boards are the backbone of modern-day electronics, acting as the central unit of anything that runs on a microchip or CPU. You must design the board in such a way that it meets the specific needs of each product. While there is no universal education requirement, most employers prefer at least an associate degree in an electronics or computer science related field. Most PCB design engineers work for computer hardware manufacturers, but some general tech companies have in-house design departments.

What are some common challenges faced by PCB design engineers during the product development cycle?

PCB Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as meeting tight deadlines while ensuring design accuracy, managing complex multilayer layouts, and adhering to strict manufacturing and regulatory standards. Collaborating effectively with hardware engineers, mechanical designers, and manufacturing teams is essential to balance design requirements and production constraints. Staying updated with evolving CAD tools and design-for-manufacturability practices also plays a significant role in ensuring successful project outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PCB design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PCB Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electronics engineering, circuit design, and PCB layout principles, often backed by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with PCB design software such as Altium Designer, Eagle, or OrCAD, and familiarity with industry standards like IPC are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and ensure design accuracy. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering reliable, manufacturable, and high-performance electronic products.

Mechanical Engineer Manager

Universal Avionics Systems Corporation

Duluth, GA โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, Retirement, PTO

Posted 19 days ago

Job description

Duluth, GA (Onsite) | Aerospace & Avionics
9/80 Schedule Available โ€“ Every Other Friday Off

Lead the Engineering Behind What Protects, Connects, and Displays Avionics Technologyย

Great avionics performance depends on more than what happens inside the electronics. The mechanical packaging, thermal performance, structural integrity, PCB design, and optical systems all have to work togetherโ€”and perform reliably in demanding flight environments.

At Universal Avionics, weโ€™re looking for a Manager, Packaging and Optics who can lead both the people and the engineering behind these critical disciplines.

This is an opportunity for an experienced mechanical engineering leader who wants to remain technically connected to the work while developing talented engineers, influencing product design, and helping bring sophisticated electronic and opto-mechanical systems from concept through qualification.

The Opportunity

Universal Avionics develops advanced avionics, enhanced vision systems, and intelligent cockpit technologies designed to improve aviation safety and situational awareness.

As Manager, Packaging and Optics, youโ€™ll lead the Packaging and Optics team within Hardware Development, with responsibility spanning mechanical engineering, PCB design, and optical systems.

Youโ€™ll build and develop engineering talent, set team priorities and goals, manage resources and budgets, and partner with Program Management and other engineering disciplines to support successful program execution.

At the same time, this isnโ€™t a role where you step away from the engineering. Youโ€™ll provide technical direction across electromechanical and opto-mechanical design, thermal and structural analysis, PCB design processes, display technologies, prototypes, and environmental qualification.

The result: a leadership role where you can develop people, shape engineering practices, and directly influence the hardware behind advanced avionics products.

What Youโ€™ll Do
  • Lead, develop, and support a team of mechanical engineers and PCB designers, creating clear goals, expectations, and opportunities for growth
  • Align departmental priorities, staffing, budgets, and engineering resources with company and program objectives
  • Partner with Program Management to plan work, assign resources, track progress, and support successful program execution
  • Provide technical leadership from early requirements and trade studies through detailed design, prototype development, testing, and qualification
  • Guide mechanical and opto-mechanical designs for commercial and military aerospace applications
  • Oversee thermal and structural analysis to ensure designs can perform reliably in their intended operating environments
  • Drive effective collaboration between Mechanical, Electrical, Systems, and other engineering functions
  • Lead PCB design practices, including IPC-aligned processes, data-library standards, and design/manufacturing reviews
  • Guide the evaluation and selection of LCD technologies and the development of optical elements needed to meet product performance requirements
  • Manage external optical design activities and maintain effective technical relationships with display and optical technology suppliers
  • Support the development of optical test capabilities and verification strategies
